Oye!

So I just picked up my second explorer. Paid 400 bucks from a guy whom I presume had a serious drug issue. Anyways, it's a 97, OHV 5speed 4door in XLT trim.

It's intake requires the conical air filter. So the owner before myself, thought it would be a good idea to throw a spectre air filter in the stock housing and simply have the MAF/intake assembly, just sit on top of it. It was far from a tight seal. So being the employee of Autozone that I am, I figured I would use my discount and purchase the correct fram air filter for it. The truck ran fine before the install of the new air filter. Upon installation of the stock filter, the truck will start, run for 5 seconds, stutter continously until it finally dies. No amount of gas pedal movement will keep it running. Throw the spectre back in there, have the setup the same way the previous owner did, and the truck runs fine.

Being the genius I am, I thought maybe the ECM/PCM was so used to the spectre filter, that I left the battery un done for 5 hours, just to reset everything. The only thing it reset was my check engine light.

I'm lost here. Can anyone throw some ideas my way?

First thing I'd try is to clean the MAF sensor with some automotive electronics cleaner. It likely got really dusty from the wrong filter and isn't sensing the proper amount of air.

Is it a OEM MAF or a calibrated MAF for the air filter?
