Here is a picture of the 00M12 kit. Anybody know how to replace the timing chain tensioner?

Anyone? I know where to put the O-rings but the tensioner has me stumped. Do I go at it from the front or do I have to open up the valve cover or maybe both????

I don't know where the parts in the plastic bag go or the big metal piece. Or that yellowish plastic stick. The only thing I'm sure of is where the two sets of O-rings go. If anyone can help me I'd like to get started on this project but I need to know how to start.

Thanks,
mikeh

I paid $50 from Ford. I'll take some pictures of the project as I go this weekend. The kit lists for $60.50. I told the Ford dealer he should at least give it to me for cost since they refused to fix the problem. So they knocked 10 bucks off.

This is a pretty major project for me. I hope it goes ok.

I have 69k on my 97x. I went to Ford to complain about the ratling noise, so they said the problem is the leaking manifold. They installed the kit and problem is gone(so far).
Do you also have the ratling noise, or is it different symptom?

I have the rattling noise on startup. The bigger problem is when the engine is cold the car won't idle properly. These new O-rings are suppose to cure that problem.

hey mikeh the tensioner is just behind the egr valve it's a flat bolt thing ..it's very hard to see because it's different from the upgrade the old one is flat so you really can't see it ...

why wouldn't ford fix this for you ?

unless your over the 72k,otherwise....they must fix it ?
as many times as it takes within the 72k range or 6 years ?

Yep I'm over 72K. I'm at 81K right now. I'm in the middle of the project as I type this. It hasn't been terrible yet. I'll let you know tomorrow if I get it running.:)

The tensioner is located on the front inside of the left cylinder head. RIght next to the tensioner is a little torx 30 plug that you remove and discard. Then install the oil restrictor rod into the head and install the new plug provided.

Thanks Slow-demon,

I finished the job and it works great. At first when I finished it wouldn't idle at all. Then I found the two vacum hoses on the back of the top of the intake manifold. I tested it on a cold morning this morning and it ran and idled great.:D :D :D :D

I'll post a write-up on this later.

Hey Slow-demon, I was suppose to just throw that piece of plastic called the (oil reduction plug) under that torx screw in the oil galley right? It didn't attach to anything right? Seemed like a weird thing to have to do. Do you know what problem that was suppose to solve?

Yeah, the plastic oil reduction plug goes under that torx plug. In my opinion, I think the purpose of that the oil reduction plug is to restrict the flow of oil drainback from the tensioner when the engine is off. Such as when you let the engine sit overnight.Thats just my opinion though. I bet you noticed how the original green intake seals go bad. They just seem to "roll" and then cause intake leaks.

slow demon.........what about the rear tensioner where is that located i looked for it and could not spot it.
i wanted to see if ford had done the rear tensioner to..they did my front tensioner ..if i let my x sit for a week with out starting it will make that deisel sound on start up for about 1 second ..it's exactly what you said the oil drains down or the cam tensioner will lose it's prime...the ford service manager at galpin ford told me that was normal

is that oil reduction plug like a check valve?

The right cylinder head tensioner is located on the outside of the head, towards the rear, and is mounted lower than the LH head's tensioner. It is not mounted like the left one. If you don't start you truck for a week's time you will hear the noise you are hearing. For a second or so which is normal.
