My 02 Eddie started running and idling rough, so when I pulled all the plugs and COPs I found that #8 was full of coolant. So since I have to replace the intake I wondered if the dorman replacement one was fine, or since I am replacing it if there was a nice "performance" one for the mustangs I could get and use instead?

I found the Professional Products Typhoon 54061 that I am looking into, and I like it because its not all plastic. Think it would be worth the extra money, on my pretty much stock explorer? However I have been looking into getting a tune for it and possibly doing some exhaust work

Is it not more likely to be an intake gasket rather than the manifold itself?

It very well could be just the gasket, I ran out of time before I had to go to work today and probably wont be able to pull it to check for sure either way until this weekend. Was just kinda curious in case the manifold itself was actually bad

If you want to just ditch the plastic intake then yes that will work but unless you swap to a bigger cam you won't see much of a increase. Having come from playing with the panther bodies we typically stick with the stock PI intake, don't get dorman. It's been dyno'd showing it makes less power then the stock PI.
On a side note, on the 05 TC I had my intake blew the gasket inside the thermostat area from the plastic warping.

Ok thanks. So if it is the manifold I'll just get the oe ford pi replacement then. I kinda have a feeling that that wont be my problem though.

Another vote for OEM intake manifold. I just replaced an original intake on a gen 3 4.6. actually did not have any issues but took it off to inspect since date code was 03. Was just starting to crack at the back ports. I would say 16 years was a good life span!

No to dorman, absolute junk especially on Power strokes. Show me a Dorman manifold in 16 years that is not disintegrated...

Kinda what I was thinking earlier, even if it is a gasket with the intake being 17 years old might as well replace it while it's off. Where did you get the one you used from?

My local dealer price matches online dealers so I usually can get 35% off which is awesome.

White Bear Lake Ford in MN and Tasca Ford out of RI usually have the best pricing. Last I looked an intake for the 4.6 Explorer was $257 plus shipping. Another plus is the manifold purchased through Ford has the high density urethane foam "noise jacket" while aftermarket do not. A lot of people toss it anyway but if it is new and on there already why throw it away?

I am curious if yours is original, what date code, and what glass fiber % it is. There should be "GF##" and a Ford stamp on it as well as small date dials on it. If you can post up I wonder what they are.

Oh, almost forgot, my manifold also came with the gasket under the throttle body. No intake gaskets however. So if you go with the Ford manifold, you will need intake manifold gaskets.

Edit 2, while you are in there you can also replace the 2 orings on the heater core pipe underneath the manifold. Cheap insurance your call.

Edit 3, if you do not change the thermostat, at least get a new oring. They heat set and often don't seal a second time if old.

I just saw one on flea bay for $239 free shipping supposedly OEM Ford out of Indy by the way

Got ya, nice indy is only like 2 hours from me if it's a legit one. I will check for date or anything when I pull it. I kinda planned on replacing the thermostat too. I will probably go ahead and change those orings while I'm there then

Question. I haven't bought an intake yet, a buddy of mine just posted an intake from his one mustang. Says it's an oem from like on the 99-04 mustangs and its from one with pi heads, could I use this with no problem? Its got a part number of 1w7e-9424-aa
