I did a similar mod today with stock air box and filter (plan to change to K&N drop in filter).

I didn't do any testing beforehand like I should have, but after, here were my results using TORQUE for android via an ODB bluetooth module.

With outside temp at 95 (per MFT display):
At park / idle: ambient air at 102 and intake air at 112~117
Cruising at 30: ambient air at 102 and intake air at 107
Cruising at 50: ambient air at 102 and intake air at 102

That's all the testing I've done so far...
Is that App available for I5 ? Does it read boost, oil pressure, EGT ?

2014 Explorer Air Intake

Does anyone know if the 2014 Explorers air intake set up is exactly the same as the previous 2011-2013 models? I am thinking of ordering a K&N Air Intake kit (http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?prod=77-2575KS) for a 2014 XLT i have ordered, but am looking for confirmation that the set up is the same before wasting the time and effort ordering the wrong product. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Where am I confused at with this mod? The ecoboost is forced induction. If you are measuring IAT from the air box that is not giving a true reading. I went with a speed density tune on my GTR and we moved the sensors to measure IAT from the boost that was actually going into the engine.

That's odd, now his question is lost... Someone would have to be deep in this thread to see his question where otherwise they would see it in the topic list?

there are other posts already showing the K&N intake didn't help at all or worth the cost. Just pointing it out so you can get more feedback and make a good decision.

In the case of Lightnings there's two IAT sensors. One in the airbox, one under the blower. So you see both sides. What's going in, and what's coming out. If the explorer only has one (I'm not sure), it's still helpful seeing what's coming into the airbox, because cooler air in, is cooler air out.

Do you happen to know where I can find those posts to get a little more info and inquire? Thanks Anomadtoo!

Cool info, what app and scanner is this?

Also, where you moving when you took this screenshot? If so, I would wonder how much she helps during start and stop traffic. Thats really when I see my IAT go through the roof.

engine link app on my iphone

Yes I was moving. Temps go up obviously when I stop but they recover pretty quickly.

Mr 10: Go to the next page, of the Forum pages, about half way down to the post entitled something like "Video Clips K & N CAI Installed." At the end of the posts the OP updated this post and explains why he took the K & N off and replaced it with stock.......this may be part of what you are looking for..

Any downside to the original mod? Car wash, rain, turbulence ?

Well as of last night it's by far the quickest and fastest explorer sport in the world and continued to run faster times than any other explorer sport after hot lapping it over a half dozen times so I guess I'm doing something right.
