I was browsing my Ford Factory Service Manual and found something kinda interesting. I have always heard that Ford Explorers, any engine type, run on 5w-30 oil. I have heard this from the dealer and other places.

Well according to Ford Factory Service the 4.0L OHV engine requires 10w-30, and the others, 4.0L SOHC and 5.0L use 5w-30. I was always led to believe they all used the same, guess not.

So, for you guys with the 4.0L OHV X vin Explorers (myself included) Ford factory service says 10w-30.

:redexp:

I have always run 10-30 in my 2.9L and 4.0L

That is interesting because the filler cap on my 4.0 OHV even says 5W-30.

The factory and the technical writers are experiencing a failure to communicate. ;)

In my owner's manual for my old '95 with the OHV, it said use 10-30 in warm climates, 5-30 in cooler climates.
