Interior Lights won't go off, door ajar light NOT lit.

One time I was restoring a 67 Mustang and the owner asked me to clean up both the door locks and latching hardware. I told him it would makes things worse. He kept saying that old grease in there isn't doing its job so please clean it all up and lube everything with Lubriplate.. I just shook my head in disbelief.

After the car was finished I kept getting phone calls from him because the door latching hardware was so clean and perfectly lubed... He kept getting locked out from the lubed up hardware dropping the lock without resistance.

Sometimes it's best just to leave some things alone..or do MINOR things to try to overcome an issue.

OK, you mean minor things like spraying a little WD-40 in there to free up the switch?

absolutely NOT

Leave the cruddy grease alone ....it is doing its job.

Spray some SILICONE LUBE in the linbkage instead.

My truck had the same problem with the interior lights on and no door ajar light. It was the dimmer switch. I would wiggle the wheel side to side and they would go off. Sometimes they wouldn't come on when I opened the door. Some more wiggling and they would come back on. Mine is a '98 so I assume yours has the same switch as mine. It was also an intermittent problem.

Water Displacement-40th formulation. Sorry, I couldn't help it!

I guess everyone on this forum is wrong.

Its a good thing you joined, you can teach us ALL what we have been doing wrong for all these years.

Ok, chill. I don't really care if WD-40 lubricates or not. It works for what I use it for. I was simply stating what I believe is the meaning of the name. Also, I had the same problem with my truck that this thread is here to discuss and I wanted to share the info I had. The root of my problem was different than everyone else that responded and I did not think that I was right and you were wrong. Just another avenue to explore. Boo hoo.

Also, original post stated the door ajar light was NOT lit.

Oops, sorry snoranger, just noticed that your comment wasn't directed to me. I also just joined so that's why I took it that way.

No problem, I dont take any offense to anything anyone says on the internet.

Ok so here we go just had this happening to me
All the interior lights on
Door mirrors lights on

But no door ajar light

If I opened a door I get a beep and a door ajar light...all doors hatch and hatch window and a door ajar light came on every time

I disconnected the battery to reset everything
No dice lights came on when I reconnected it

The dimmer switch turned to off did not turn them off

If it was the gem it would work or not work unless it has a bad connection somewhere if so I can fix that

Can this be a stuck relay or a dimmer or a bad connection if so where do I look there is a relay box under the dash under the hood and in the jack access panel ??

So I got mad naturally
A smashed the dash and 3 seconds later the lights went out then started working normal Again
This has happened 2 times in the last week I did not smash the dash the first time

Please help

Does anyone have all the relay boxes I mentioned labels so I can identify all of them

I think @Turdle was recently gathering this kind of information. Your owner's manual covers some of them, but there are many more relays and locations.

The owners manual is long gone
Not in the hayns book either

Also can someone tell me what the 2 wires going to the door latch are one is a switch the other one Idk

thanks @J_C

My daughter's '00 Mountaineer will sometimes do this. In her case I find that if you open and re-close the rear hatch a time or 2 the interior lights will go off. IIRC her door-ajar light isn't on when this happens either.

Jessica my wife just got home I am gonna spray the crap out of all the door latch assembly s
With wd-40 ...water displacement formula 40 ...
And I am gonna use forscan to see if there is any codes in the gem

Ok so GEM on Forscan had a code indicating Accessory Delay Relay, so I used the bilateral control function in Forscan and I was able to toggle the relay and it was working fine, also toggled battery saver, interior lights, all the door switches, and door ajar lights. All seem to be fine.

I removed the Accessory Delay Relay, and it was dirty on the five pins, so I cleaned them and the socket then put it back.

When I used Forscan the PID for the Accessory Delay Relay, the relay clicked softly and sometimes not at all, but after a while of toggling it on and off it had a more positive clicking sound, the PID would tell me it was on or off when I toggled it even if it stuck in place so the GEM was working, when it would stick it would throw the code, does this sound like a sticking relay.

It seems to be working fine now but was working intermittently before so I'm not sure if the problem is solved.

I'm still gonna spray the crap out of the door hinges, and most likely gonna replace that relay with a spare I have on hand from the junk yard that I know works.

Any ideas or thoughts, I am completely open to.

Thanks, Don
