intermitent and now gone 4x

ok..so ive been trolling this forum for over a year now..and gathered myself a good deal of info..but..due to a brain injury a few years back..retantion of short term stuff is FUBAR

ive been working on my own stuff since 91..everything but the internals of automatics...i do body/paint/rust repair to full on custom stuff...so im no noob when it comes to anything mechanical

that said

i was GIVEN a 01 explorer sport(10/00) when my buddy got deployed to afgan..his words were "fix it, blow it up, sell it i dont care..but if you mangle it get me vid and pics"..that said i set out to look into it..it needed a rad, rear window hinges, a bad howl in the rear axle and minor cosmetics and a general going over along with rear springs....i got it road worth at minimal cost and figured hey its a descent lil rig ill hang onto it for now..not that i need it or have the space for it but..ill use it and sit on it till he gets back and give it back to him when he gets back from deployment.....well last year he got back i gave it back and then a few months later he was down marrying me and my wife(yup he is ordained) and gave it back to me as his dad paid half in on a new jeep

ive since given the explorer mostly to my wife till we get her yaris 5dr imported from canada

i just did the f150 spring mod and gained 5 inches out back..as the srpings were FLAT and gone it was lower in the rear than the front...with a twist of the t bars its level 36" at the wheel wells all the way around

now heres the thing..its a 2dr sport..LOADED best i can tell zero options missing...when i got it i tryed out the 4x..it worked..a month later i NEEDED it..and it worked but hesitated....so i tryed it a few times out at the farm..never wheeled with it..but i couldnt get it to work again PERIOD...ive swaped out the switch with 6 i pulled from the wreckers...still nothing..i pulled the shift motor apart and it functions just fine(but does it work as ford intended?)....i get no clicks, no lights..nothing

i set out in an attempt to replace the 4x modual...a motorola unit..and have been unable to find one.....it seems as if im looking in the wrong place.....mine is mounted in the passenger kick panel.....ive been searching other wreckers etc and NONE of them have a 4x there..just a restraint modual..so ive been checking behind the radio panel...and none of them have the motorola unit...do i have a 1/2 year switch model or something..i know fords good at doing that kind of BS

me and my wife have been using the lil explorer as a dirtbike/quad hauler mostly..and we would really like to get the 4x working as the logging roads where we ride are NOT in good shape

in all honesty i never intended to keep this lil *******.....but its kinda grown on me...for now....or untill i get my 74 ramcharger back on the road

4wd is controlled by an electromagnetic clutch which is energised by the brown wire that goes into the transfer case.

The shift motor operates the high/low range.

thing is..no lights, no shift either.....im fully aware of the "how" the system works with the brown wire electro mag clutch and the "shift motor" ....just stumpped on the "why" NOTHING seems to be doing anything

heck i used a similar transfercase on a 4x ford van i built for someone..used one of the bigger "shift motor" t cases form an expedition..and then modified it to be cable shifted

Checked 2001-05 Sport Tracs?

The 01-03 Sport has EXACTLY the same front end as the 2001-2005 Sport Trac .....NO difference.
They are totally different from the regular 4-door Explorer.

ive scavanged thur 6 wreckers and come across atleast 10+ sports....NONE have the modual in the same spot as mine..fact is i never found a 4x module..thus my extra being stumped

are the switches..from the 4dr etc the same switch?..i know they will plug in and they "seem" to be the same but have no way of knowing for certain

i assume im looking at a 4x mondule issue correct?.....removed module and i lose the dome light and a bunch of other stuff...so i know the unit atleast partialy works

and this is the 2wd, 4high, 4low unit

in my reading i seee that theres a few modules..mines

do any other rigs use said module?..is it mounted in some other location im not looking in? ...what stumps my is every sport ive dug into has had the restrain box mounted down there....except mine
