My Check Engine Light has been coming on intermittently lately (and increasing in frequency). The codes retrieved from the OBD system are 172 (Heated oxygen sensor indicates lean condition - right side) and 173 (Heated oxygen sensor indicates rich condition - right side). Is this indicating a failing O2 sensor? Would it be the upstream or downstream sensor? Also - (man, is this a stupid question) - what is the point of reference for the "right side"?

I have a '92 XLT/2WD with 108K miles.

Thanks --
Rick

you only have 2 o2 sensors.... they are most likely bad..... replace both of them one of them is bad, and the other will probably go soon....

Same problem I had, same fix suggested above.
