Just wanted to say a quick hello. I've got a '96 2wd 6cyl XLT that serves as the wife's baby mobile. I regret it not being 4wd, but I have a 71 Bronco that will serve as my 4wd toy when I get it put back together. I haven't done much work on cars prior to two years ago, so I'm learning as I go.

I changed the transmission fluid in my 96 Explorer with 110k miles and now the transmission doesn't want to go into gear and when it does it has a tendency to slip out of gear when I'm taking off. It seems to slip out of gear, the gear selector on the column is fine and lines up. It does this in Reverse and Drive. I removed the transmission oil pan, changed the filter and replaced the 3 quarts of fluid (capacity is 9.5 quarts) with Castrol Dexron III/Mercon (The bottle says that it meets all specs for Ford transmissions '83-96 for Dexron II). My manual and Chilton's both say Dexron II. I've been through all the gears and even drove it around part of yesterday. The problem has gotten better, but on the way home last night I had pulled through an intersection and it slipped out of gear and I was almost rearended. Any ideas why this is happening and how I can get it fixed?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Hello, this is a great board youll like it here. You problem could be that the trans is just worn out,and when you changed the fluid, its no longer working properly.Ive seen it happen a few times.Have you checked the fluid level while idling in Park on level ground, just to make sure its not under/over full? Some companys also sell additives to put in the trans as well, but that would be a "band aid" more than a fix.
