My sister had my X (94) for a little while and took it to a quickie lube place for an oil change-- after she refused a new fuel filter and air filter, they teased a little extra cash out of her by telling her they needed to put 6 quarts of oil in the engine and charging her for the extra quart.

I was hoping that they just ripped her off and didn't actually put the extra oil in, but I just checked and it is overfilled. Will an extra quart do any harm? Should I try to get the extra oil out, or is it OK to let it go to the next change?

Thanks for your help.

I would get it out. Theres the possiblity of excess blowby and leaky seals.

If there is too much oil in the crankcase the crankshaft can dip into the oil as it spins causing the oil to be thrown onto the cylinder walls to the point the rings leak causing smoke. Also this aerates the oil which is terrible for oil pressure and can result in catastrophic results.

I agree with the rest!

Wow! No ambiguity here-- I'll drain it out!

Thanks!

Ditto, and the easiest answer is to change the filter, that's about a quart. Spend the $3 for a filter and go back to the oil change place for reimbursement. If they are not far away, call them and drive straight there. Limit rpm's that the engine reaches, good luck.

and make sure you tell her to never go back there again!:D

I would suggest that you speak to the manager before confronting the guy which made the oil change. He might deny any claim against himself by explaining that there was somebody else which performed thre work on that day. The manager would have a copy of the receipt, and know if he really did it or not.

And don't forget to tell people what happened. Neighbors, friends, coworkers, people on the street, anybody who will listen... Word of mouth advertising is extremely effective against con men, especially when it's negative.

I think this kind of thing is management down-- why would some tech that's getting $X/hr care? Either pressure or incentive from above to push sales of unnecessary stuff.

I told her she should find an independent shop where she may pay a few dollars more for an oil change, but it won't be a loss-leader.

So does anyone know a good, honest mechanic near Alexandria, VA?
