Is AMOCO 87 the best gas to use?

I have a 97 xlt sohc 4x4, and I use AMOCO 87 (regular) in the X and I get 15.3 mpg city and 18.8mpg on the highway. I just got a new air filter so that helped a little bit. But is this type of fuel the most efficient fuel to use?

Use a high quality fuel of the proper octane for your car, usually dictated by your owner's manual, except if you've done more significant modifications that might result in pre-ignition (compression ratios, etc.).

If your car doesn't need higher octane, you are both throwing away money and possibly losing performance, as higher octane is formulated to burn slower, in order to prevent detonation.

A major brand, like Amoco, gets you the additives package you want and imnproves chances of not getting stale, poorly formulated, or contaminated gas.

YES! Amoco 87 is the BEST fuel you can use in your X. I work at an Amoco, so I know some of the addictives that go into the fuel. These are all good, and help clean your engine. I would only recomend a higher octane fuel if you experience detonation (pinging) or have done some serious performance mods. Amoco uses no Ethonol, so you get pure gasoline. If you use a fuel that contains 10% or more Ethonol, expect to get anywhere from 1-3 less MPG. A lot of Amocos were bought out by BP recently, so expect some of them to change their stores, but dont worry, all BP stations will use Amoco fuel.

I beg to differ... It may depend on where ya live, but out near IA and even near chicago, 87 stations are labeled 10% ethanol... leading me to believe it does have it...
unless they're advertising it wrong....

Yup... and if i had a digi cam, I'd get photos.... I was at the amoco here at school, and there is the 10% ethanol sticker there, and 95% sure they've got em back home....

Okay, Ill take your word on it. I thought all Amocos used pure gasoline, cuase most of it comes from the same refinery. I know that most of them in Michigan use pure gasoline...It kinda makes me sick that even Amoco is switching to the domestic crap...

I think in some states they have to run a % ethanol by law.

Lawmakers are shortsighted though. As was stated above, ethanol reduces mileage. So even though you may pollute less, you use more gas, which ends up hurting the environment more than the slight decrease in emissions.

RFR2212, is right, I live in IA, and the city I live in borders Omaha, NE. EVERY Amoco station in the Metro area, has Ethanol.

The Amoco stations in Kansas City, MO also has Ethanol. Must just be a midwest thing.

While I do agree this is a great fuel, I am curious why you use it in your Explorer...If you are experiencing pinging, I can see using it, but your X should run find on regular (87) Amoco Blue. Unless you like emptying your wallet for the Ultimate, give good ole regular a try...

All tho about every 6-7 tanks I run a half tank of Ultimate just to get everything a little cleaner...But I can hardly notice any performance increases...

Basically, I do not drive far, so I spend a little extra for higher grade gas, maybe an extra five a week, and I get better response at accelleration. I try to use what I think is the best. If I can't get Amoco, then I use Texaco.

I agree to an extent, but I also use the best plugs wires filters, etc. everything I put on is top grade. 178,000 miles still romps like a new one.

Just to add to this post, cleaner burning fuel should lead to less deposits not more, also on temps, I run a ten bladed fan which on a 100 degree day with the air on going 75 down the highway the temp never passes the n,o area.
