Is an Explorer a truck?

With how badly my mounty rides ford is luckey I don't call it a rock pile lol but I guess truck will do for now, even if it does ride like a semi with no suspension I still wouldn't trade it for the world. well, maybe a 2005 Subaru impreza wrx sti =p

So, I'm goin to throw in my (near) worthless opinion here...

Body - on - Frame = truck ??? I don't think so, as my Grand Marquis is full frame.
Turdles: CTR (Car Truck Rig) - that sounds a lot like my 68' ford Ranchero (trar? cruck?)

Independent suspension keeps you from being a truck? I THINK NOT!!! The army's newest MRAP's are fully independant. Ural, Tatra T 813 and MB, huge supremely capable trucks are also independant... Below is a Tatra T 813,

My vote is on "truck". It's not a uni-body, has a large engine, a legit amount of "soft road" prowess, and can tow more than it's own weight properly equipped. It's based on a truck chassis, yes.

P.S. I'll throttle you if you call my lifted X a "van"

from 1991 to 2001 the explorer had a solid rear axle, leaf sprung, as well as a full length steel frame. Based directly from the Ranger TRUCK platform

they are trucks until 2002 Gen III, these I call Mini Vans :) although the boxed frame is wicked strong, I just dont do IRS when it comes to trucks

I'd have to agree with that statement. After 2001 they lost that "truck feel." I plan on keeping my 98 & 01 for a very long time.

yes it's a truck when I tow my trailer

its considered a truck cuz of it weight. its classified as a Light Duty truck. I currently was employed by bob turners ford in Albuquerque, NM and this is wat their classified under when you look for parts.

Well they WERE trucks...

Interestingly enough, the 2011 Truck of the Year is the Ford Explorer. Yet the 2011 Ford Explorer is no longer on a Light Truck Chassis. It is more Car Based.

I refer to it as both a truck and car, but being on a frame its truck based. Legally in PA its not a truck. It does not have truck plates as a pick-up, and the registration I believe says "station wagon". The new one is not a truck. I think ford calls it a "CUV"? (crossover utility vehicle?)

Mine's a truck

It's a truck, but also based on everyone's definition of 'truck' here, my body-on-frame '77 Chevelle is a truck as well. Hmm, now that I think about it, it CAN pull more than the Explorer, has the same payload (1,000 pounds) seats 6, gets the same mileage, and nearly as boxy, so I guess it could be a truck, though it behaves much better in crosswinds.

The 2011 Explorer is a Taurus wagon, so its basically dead to me now.

One of the things I really like about my Explorer is it's pretty capable of doing a lot, not necessarily all well, but moreso than a unibody car can. It still looks good, hauls stuff pretty well, gets decent mileage, carries 5 pretty good, goes off road pretty good, and looks right at home with all the high-end luxury cars at work. Oh and cheap to fix, even with 280k on the clock.

I used to drive a truck..... Needed a CDL to drive it.... I sometimes call the explorer a pickup though....

It is a pickup with roomy back seats and a carpeted, covered, nearly useless box.

A tough call...

Where I grew up, a "truck" would be something like that Tatra shown in one of the previous posts, what Brits would call a "lorry"...had a license to drive one of those back in the days, so couldn't really throw my Explorer in the same bucket, so to speak...

Having said that, one of the beauties of the Explorer is that it can be pretty much what one needs it to be: a truck, a car or an all-terrain-vehicle...

I called my '00 Mounty my SUV or car and my 92 Explorer I call a truck.

For me it came down to luxury and having a Lo-range.

I've been a truck guy all my life - my Mounty did NOT feel like a truck, lol. It felt like an incredibly capable mini-van.
The Ex, well that's a different story :)

Its a "vehicle" with 4 wheels on the ground (hopefully) and goes forward - good enough .

I always just refer to mine as "the explorer" when talking to other people. I have not named it and don't call it a car.

Sometimes I will say truck. But most often I just say explorer.

It rolls off the tongue nicely.

Anything with a massive full length fully boxed frame with massive multi-piece-construction cross members that are welded all the way around, even on body mounts (no rivets), and with sway bars bigger than your wrist, I certainly do not call a car.

Possibly. Im not quite sure tho. Don't know much about titles. whats STA-WAG mean? I think it is fair to call it a truck. Cause I get offended when someone calls it a car. anyone else? haha

I don't know what is meant by a quote. To me a Explorer is a truck; I was told and my book says that the body is mounted on a 1/2 ton frame and drive train. My four wheel drive is the same as on a pickup truck. It is MY truck and I don't like it when people call if a car. Look inside, it is set up for fishing and camping for me and my beagle. It's a truck.

Yeah I agree. I call my 2000 XLT my Exploder. :exp: I do like it and it is my only vehicle. When it's clean we go to church, when it's dirty we go fishing. and I clean it every Sat. afternoon after having gone fishing. :)

You sure about that? The F-150 is 1/2 ton, the F-250 is 3/4 ton, and the F-350 is 1-ton

I'm not sure about anything and I really dislike know it alls questioning everything. That's why I don't normally participate in these forums.
So that being said I will never participate again.
