I just purchased a nice 00 XLT 4-Door and first noticed that in parking lots it always steers like it is in 4-WD then I noticed that the switch on the dash has: Auto - 4WD High - Low.

So would I be correct in assuming that the Auto position must be because it is AWD? If not it would say 2WD correct?

It's not what Ford calls it's AWD system, but basically it is a type of AWD. Usually the front axle is engaged about 5%, but will automatically engage up to 50% if needed. However, your front differential is open (and your rear may be also), so if one front tire loses traction your front end won't be helping you out at all.

BTW, welcome!

PS: there is a simple and cheap electrical mod you can do to give yourself true 2wd so you'd have 2wd, auto, 4hi, and 4lo.
