Then the 4.0L is good for you. The 4.0L would be a better DD, more fuel-efficient, and can do moderate off-roading and trail-riding.

The 4.0L in either form is NOT the problem with the Explorers.....

It is the transmissions. Period.

Both 4.0L engines have been proven time and time again off-road. And the weak link in the chain has also shown its ugly head just as many times on and off road.

If you are after power AND reliability in the WHOLE drivetrain package....get a 5.0L/4R70W/4406 and never look back.

Yes but the 5.0L Explorer doesn't come with a 4LO option out of the box - which is critical on the trail in reducing drivetrain stress and increases vehicle control.

True, I think that was a mistake on ford's part. I thought some 5.0's came with a knob saying: AWD 4H and 4L

...nope...

The 5.0L Explorers only came in 2 flavors....2WD, or AWD (via BW4404 transfercase)

Which is why I said to put a 4406 in there...

Yeah like ryan said go for the 4406 if you get a V8. Yeah I couldn't find that post. Good thing I didn't buy a 5.0L, I prefer the part-time 4wd, not the awd. :D
