I just made a deposit on a 1998 explorer xlt it has the regular V6 4.0 The miles are high, it has 109,000 on the odometer. The body is mint. It comes with most of the goodies like leather seats, moonroof, cd/cassette player, keyless entry, etc. The interior is like new. I will be paying $8,900.00 for it. Since I only left a 10% deposit I can still back out this deal without losing most of my money. The engine looks and sounds good. The tranny seems to be working ok with no signs of leaks. What do you guys think? Should I buy it or past. By the way I will be using the truck mostly to transport me and the family back and forth.
Thanks in advance

sounds really good to me.... around here a 98 with around 100k would go for like 10-12 grand. why must cars be so damn expensive out here in cali??

If it's a 2wd, that sounds to be around the going price.
If it's a 4wd, that is a GREAT price. Don't let that one get away.

Yes it's a 4x4.
Thanks for the help so far guys!

yea sounds real good

Seems to be a good deal as long as you said the body is in mint and fully loaded with goodies. Also to tell if the tranny is working smoothly is you like for it to shif a little hard, it shows the tranny to respond proper. If the tranny changes gears like you don't feel it move from gear to gear... then I would IMO assume the tranny is gonna have probs really soon

ALso depending where you live,, like myself living here in Austin, TX miles is not a factor... majority of people drive allot and its all highway miles.

Good luck!

make sure it goes into 4 wheel drive before you buy it. The price sounds like a steal to me... I wouldn't pass it up

also, run its vin through carfax...... 890 bucks deposit and then 20 for carfax isnt bad....make sure it wasnt a collision rebuild.......

Definately run the VIN, and definately find out if the transmission has been rebuilt.

I'd also purchase some sort of extended warranty.

Go for it though, my 97 is at 100K and still going strong, one tranny rebuild and thats it.

Sounds like a great buy, seeing as I just paid 9k for a '97 with a salvage title.

As far as the transmission goes, I wouldn't worry too much about it...other than knowing that every Explorer owner will have to replace or rebuild their transmission somewhere down the road...most problems start around 120,000 miles, but my first tranny lasted til 180,000 with no problems (shouldn't have towed a 21' inboard from Kentucky to Florida.)

Buy it! Even if you have to spend a few thousand on it in the future, you're still going to be ahead in the long run.
