I got a Hyptertech chip yesterday and put it in. Now my X seems to be idling kinda rough. I was told it will probably run rough for about 30 miles because it has to get used to the chip. It doesn't always run rough, it just starts and stops. I took out and put back in the chip a few times, trying something different each time. The last time I put it in, I took it out of that little black case and pushed it in firmly, then set the case back on top just for protection. It says the screws holding it to the case are for aligning, but I don't see how this would need to be aligned since it fits in only one way and the prongs are on a flat surface. Anybody have any ideas? I thought it was supposed to run better after idling for 15 mins and then being driven.

What octane gas are you running, and what octane gas does the chip require?

Chip requires 93+, highest here is 92, so I have 92 + octane booster (pretty sure it's a gimmick though).

How long have you been putting 92 in? It might just be that lower octane is still in the engine. Just a thought.

Well I know I had maybe 1/4 gallon of 87 when I put the chip in, that's why the octane booster, since I heard lower octane will contaminate the whole thing. Could this be a problem?

Have you unhooked the battery and reset the computer? Just asking

I did when I was putting the chip in, but I didn't reset it after the chip was in.

Make sure both the chip and the computer plug are cleaned very well. Also, secure the chip to the back of the computer with Duct tape to make sure it stays tight. And try resetting the computer again.

Yeah I think it may be dirty. I cleaned the prongs a couple times on the computer but got a little grease on the chip. Should I clean it with finger nail polish remover?

Clean it with straight rubbing alcohol or acetone. Don't use a nail polish remover with any additives. Qtips work well for application.

I cleaned out the chip this time. I'm not really sure why this would matter though because isn't the grease they have on the computer electrical grease? Anyways, it is still running the same. Now I'm not really sure if this would be considered a rough idle. It's idling at around 700 or 800, and the guage is sitting still. Under the hood it sounds normal and the engine isn't shaking around a lot, but at the exhaust the sound is not coming out smoothly, it's kind of a rough sound. But now that I think about it, isn't that what Flowmaster mufflers are supposed to do? I think I'll just leave it and see if anything seems to be different. I tried without the chip, and resetting the computer, and the sound out the exhaust was the sound, so I dunno...

Did you let it idle for 10-15 minutes after putting it in? Also some people take it for a hard drive for 10 minutes as well. It might be your computer getting used to the chip. I would drive it for a few days, and if it still seems rough, I would do some more troubleshooting.

After reading some threads on rough idle, I'm thinking I might replace my IAC Valve. It couldn't hurt, and it's not too expensive. I took it for a very hard drive after installing it, I was doing burnouts a lot easier though! My new plugs and wires are coming soon, so that might also help.
