98 explorer sport 2wd
i have a 98 sport with the ohv 4.0l engine. it needs a maf. i cant get a quote from my work on a MAF until monday (i hope my parts lady gets the hook up with that, but i doubt it) so i looked on ebay and found this

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...0379663894&sspagename=STRK:MEWAX:IT&viewitem=

now it doesnt SAY it fits the 98 explorers, but i have a feeling it will. i looked on rock auto to try and cross reference it between the 98 and 99 explorers. i found that 98 ohv and sohc use the same sensor, and 99 sohc and ohv use the same sensor, but the part numbers change between those two years. so obviously its interchangeable between the two motors themselves.

when i look at the pictures, for the 98's i see the maf comes with the whole housing as well and has part number XXXXX. when i look at the 99 mafs, its seems like its just the maf itself without the housing. is this whats responsible for the part number change? is the sensor interchangeable? or did something happen to the ohv and sohc engines in 99 that requires a differently calibrated or different maf altogether?

i think it should fit, but if anyone has any experience before i drop $70 on a sensor that might not work, that would be nice.

I'd wait a short bit, someone will post about it. Ford had older MAF's without the air temp sensor, but the latest MAF's include that sensor. The old ones all were four wired, and now they are all six wired. That may be it, or it could be something else.

All of the Ford MAF's have the actual sensor inside of a housing. The electrical sensor is the special part. Look at your 98 to see if it looks the same as that eBay listing.

There were a huge number of changes made in the 98/99 model years.

yea, when i pop my sensor out, it seems to look the same. unfortunately it doesnt show the connector side or how many pins it has. mine is a 4 pin like you said, and the air temp sensor sits inside the intake and not in the maf (again, like you said lol).

im waiting on a response to see if he can provide a part number. its sunday, so ill probably have to wait until monday at least.

If you don't get an answer here soon, you could call a Ford dealer and ask parts. Often they can take the part number like you have, 1998, and see that it has been replaced by another which also covers later years.
