Is this vibration normal?

Welcome to the Forum DaveGriff.:wavey:
Well that diagnosis is certainly a new one. Never noticed it on my 2011 Limited.

Slow Speed Vibration

To add a little more information.
In late April 2014, I bought a Ford certified pre-owned 2011 Limited with the tow package from a dealer, and it had 24,000 miles on it (after 2 year lease).

When I began to notice the vibration or wobble while accelerating slowly between 10 - 15 mph, it didn't bother me much, because it wasn't present beyond 15 mph. However, I thought I ought to have it checked because it might either become worse or cause a different problem.

The first suspect was a tire problem, but I had the best tire outfit in the Washington DC area drive the car and check the tires. Not a tire problem.

I took the car to the dealer as noted, and while test driving the car, the immediate diagnosis was a tire defect (belt defect) on a real wheel, as the vibration seemed to occur in direct relation to one revolution of the wheel. All tires were removed and inspected thoroughly. No defect.

The dealer kept the car for a second day, and toward the end of the second day, the dealer said they had just driven a variety of Explorers on their lot, and the vibration was found in each car, and the vibration was "normal" which meant there was nothing to worry about. As noted, the vibration resulted from a computer attempting to sync the wheels. In other words, bring the car back when it develops a real problem.

(I did see one post that said the replacement of the cv axles solved their problem.)

I was skeptical because why was I the first person to notice a problem that is present in all Explorers?

Well, I now have a REAL problem. A week ago, my wife mentioned that she must have hit a major pothole. There was no damage to a tire or wheel rim, so I did not worry about it. Yesterday, 9 Sep 14, I was driving the car with my grandson in a second seat. At 35 mph, I crested a small hill and let off the accelerator. As I reapplied the accelerator, an incredible BANG / JOLT occurred, and I thought I must have hit a shallow ditch in the pavement. As I slowed down and tried to determine what had occurred, the same thing happened again (within 20 - 30) seconds. This time I knew it was in the drive train, and my grandson in the second row said the sound came from behind and below, but he couldn't tell if the sound came from only the center area or from one of sides.

Now I am a very unhappy camper. I have seen one post where a 2011 TSB seems to have solved a similar problem, but the TSB does not apply to 2012 Explorers and later. I will be taking my Explorer into the dealer, and I will let you know the outcome. I will either be lucky if the TSB applies, or they will not be able to duplicate the problem. I will let everyone know the outcome.

Dave, the vibration issue you described is not present in all Explorers. Also, as long as you still have the factory warranty in effect any repairs, whether covered by a TSB or not, should be covered under the warranty.

Hi Crystal, looks like I could use your help!...

Sure thing, saldivo2! My response to your PM is in your inbox.

I'd like to step in here and do what I can to help as well, DaveGriff. PM me your info (full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, current mileage, and servicing dealership) so I can get to work on this.

Add me to the list. My 14 Sport did it from day one. Had tires balanced 3 times with no change. Mine has the same symptoms as some of the others, smooth up to about 60 mph, then start to feel a shudder type vibration that annoys me.

That seems to be a different vibration than the one experienced by DaveGriff who has it between 10 - 15 mph.

You're not the first person. It seems to be present in AWD models and has been reported on here starting with the 2011 models. I notice it in my wife's 2011 on occasion from day 1 new. She doesn't. Not worth the time or the risk of letting the dealership monkeys try to find something and make something worse. It's also out of warranty now. Good luck. I'm not sure the dealership was incorrect in what they told you.

The banging transmission happens less frequently, usually at a slower speed and during a "rolling stop". The transmission / programming is pretty sloppy compared to some of the better transmissions on the market. (Aisin and ZF 8 speeds).

Note to 182RG

Don't mean to split hairs, but I was attempting to say that the dealer's explanation did not seem logical. If the low speed vibration or wobble was present and normal in every Explorer limited with AWD, then why did the dealer treat the problem as a complete surprise that they were unable to resolve until the end of the second day, when they said it was "normal."

But I am most interested in the current problem that may or may not be related to the low speed vibration / wobble. The incredible Bang/Jolt in my 2011 Explorer Limited AWD occurs at speeds under 35 mph while coasting to a stop or maybe while coasting and then touching the accelerator again. It seems as though the transmission / drivetrain is having difficulty shifting to a lower gear and then it slams into that gear, or after coasting and you apply the accelerator the transmission / drivetrain slams into another gear.

When I say Bang/Jolt and slams into gear, the sound in the car is equivalent to a gunshot, but metallic in nature. It is not a thud or a bump.

Are you aware of any other threads or posts that relate to this problem? It might help me, if there have been others who have experienced a similar problem. I'm looking for an explanation and a solution.
Thanks

How many miles are on your Explorer, APMECH? I'll see what I can do to assist.

Update to my issue. It is finally fixed. 4 Trips and they replace the passenger side bearing this time in addition to the driver side bearing and axle shaft.

My Ex (2013 Limited AWD) is going in for the 15 mph wobble (and a couple other little things) on October 17. Please pray for my Kodiak to get better.

I'm glad you're getting your dealership involved, dudefish. How many miles are on your Explorer?

Hi Crystal, it has about 37,500 miles on it. Still under 12/12,000 certified pre-owned warranty. I will definitely send you a PM if I need help. :)

Good deal, dudefish; I'm always just a PM away.

I haven't been here to update as my life has been very hectic with work and my infant :-)

I took mine in the first time a couple months ago and I got the whole "We don't notice it". The second time (probably 3 weeks ago) they took off all the wheels and told me that 2 of the wheels were slightly off balance so they re balanced them. It doesn't feel like a bad balance at all. After that my wife has been driving it for the most part. I took it on a trip this weekend and it was driving me nuts. I can still feel it the wheel and in the floor (pedal mostly). I am however noticing now that it seems to happen right around the 2000 rpm mark when moving. If I rev it to 2000 when i'm sitting in Park it really doesn't seem to do it that I can tell.

Has anyone found a true solution to this? I've seen that a few people have had cv axles and wheel bearings replaced so I'm really tempted to ask the service center about those things. Is there any tsbs related to this at all yet? I have about 1.5 years or 10k left on my bumper to bumper so it'd be nice to figure it out before then:D

Well my local ford dealer wasn't able to do anything. They told me that they were willing to look but doubted they could find anything. They referred me to a larger Ford dealer about 45 miles away that has specialty tools for narrowing down vibration problems. I will make an appointment with this other Ford dealer and see if they can track it down.

Thanks for the update, orangesoda123. When are you headed in to the different dealership? How many miles does your Explorer have on it now?

Hi Crystal!

Sorry for the delayed response. My Ex has just under 26,000 miles. Unfortunately I will not be able to go to the other dealership for quite some time. My next planned trip to the city with the other Ford dealer is probably over a month away. However, I took it to our local Firestone to have the wheels road force balanced (felt a vibe through the seats at highway speed) and while they got the seat vibration taken care of, they believed that the vibration in the front was caused by a CV Axle. My Ex has to go in Friday to replace a broken window trim piece and they are going to do an inspection of the cv axles as well as the rest of the car to see if they can find anything. I am REALLY hoping they can find something because its driving me nuts. This vehicle is primarily used by the wife and son so I want to make sure nothing is going to break on them on the highway.
