I have a 2005 4.0l explorer xlt with magnaflow ex and a kkm CAI. I had seen some people mention getting headers on their truck for some improvement in hp. Can anybody here confirm that, or recommend them if they have them or have heard otherwise?

And a second question is after looking at a few sites that sell the JBA's they want to know what side my EGR is on, passenger or driver side. anybody know?

Thanks

i was looking at getting headers but was told it wont do much for performance because the stock manifolds flow very well...so i spent the money on an sct livewire and im glad i did...

Auburnfan what kind of mileage do you get with the 4.0L with performance mods on a setup like yours?

14.5 mpg city/highway combined

thats actual as the livewire calibrated 610/revolutions per mile as needed for the 33 inch tire

I have the JBA headers on mine. I have never had it tested but it seems they provide a little more get up and go. It mostly just got louder and throatier. I also have a MAC intake and MAC exhaust. My EGR was on the passenger side, I have the 4.0

Thanks usmc that was just the info i was looking for! I may wait a bit before i put the headers on, i want to try a tuner first and see what that does.

Anybody using an underdrive pulley? I have heard many different things about them, mostly people having trouble matching pulley's up just right so thing dont go out of whack.

Basically I am looking for the most performance out of my 4.0 v6 as i can get, just short of installing a supercharger. What else can i do to this truck for more performance?

Swap it out for a V8....

But seriously, exhaust, intake, UDP, E-Fan, tune....those seem to be the prevailing opinions on here, and for good reason.

Can you recommend where I can find the underdrive pulley from?

as far as headers go, on the sohc, their purpose is not to flow better, because more flow would only slow down exhaust gas. their purpose is to use the exhaust pulses to better scavenge the cylinders, and introduce more fresh air when the intake valve opens.
but... without any forced induction mods (turbo/supercahrge) you will most likely not "feel" and big gains from a set of headers. it might be a small number on the dyno, but not something your gonna really notice in everyday driving.

Woohoo somebody finally got it right!

My dyno book shows really impressive gains on the 4.6L v8's, but im NOT SURE about the 4.0's.....i don't have dynos on those engines.

If they make aftermarket Intake Elbows/Throttle Bodies for your motor, that's a cheap way to gain 5-10 hp, give or take.....

Obviously you can free quite a bit of horsepower up on just about ANY modern vehicle, because of emissions choking up the system and robbing them of power.....but it depends how illegal you wanna get, and if you need to pass emissions or not.

Well I decided to go with the 5 piece underdog drive pulley set (blue) and I found the JBA headers at buyjba.com website for $316.13, thought that was a pretty good price so I bought them. If all else fails I guess I can get the x-charger around tax time, lol. But before that I am going to try a tune, after I get all the parts installed, and see what that gives me.
