- 03 Explorer E.B
I bought my 03 E.B with the front driveshaft disconnected. After installing a driveshaft to test the viscous coupler my explorer would bind doing the figure eight test. My first thought was to buy a new V.C for $400 but after seeing a video on bench testing a transfer case, I decided to try it myself.
My local junkyard is filled with explorers and transmissions are always pulled off these trucks. Luckily for me they just leave the transfer case under the vehicle. So I grabbed the nicest looking T.C and paid $114 with 30 days to return. Figured I would just bench test until I found one that worked. So I setup my used unit and it passed the test according to YouTube test.
Next was the removal and installation of the T.C. I pretty much followed another YouTube video and removing the old unit was pretty easy thanks to gravity. Hardest part of the job was lifting the replacement unit and fitting it on the transmission output shaft. After reassembly I did the figure eight test and it rolls as smooth as butter. Also took a fourty mile drive and everything is quite.
Maybe it was luck but from my first experience, the bench testing of the viscous coupler is accurate. I'm going to bench test the old one and see how it reacts to the test. One thing I should have done was replace u-joints and balance the driveshaft while it was out.
