congrats and welcome! hum, what trim option is it? and what engine? sounds like a pretty good deal so far

Well he said its a Limited... Read the post people.

I would say thats average to a little high for year and mileage. Is there a warrenty of any kind or a back out option once you actually get your hands on it? I would be worried about buying a ride that you have to trust the seller to tell you everything and not be able to drive it first.

The most common problem with the second generation is the tranny and also the timing chain rattle. The timing chain is not a really big issue if you can mechanic yourself but if the tranny is starting to go then plan on spending $1,000 - $2,000 for a rebuilt. Other than the tranny explorers are an incredible truck and will take a good beating and still be able to log well over 200,000 miles.

Good Buy?

I bought a '98 Limited on e-bay four years ago. The transmission went with about 110,000 - $2000 for a rebuild. The blend door was also broken when I bought it, although I didn't realize it until the weather warmed up a little. The AM/FM CD player lost its display about a year after I bought it. The air ride just went bad (115,000) but I don't yet know exactly whats wrong, probabaly leaking air from one or more of the bags - another expensive fix is likely.

I like the truck in spite of these issues but would probably not buy another Ford light truck until someone could convince me that the transmission problems have been corrected. I had another Explorer before this one and had to replace the transmission, TWICE.
