Well I tempted fate and won. Had to drive to Ohio from New Jersey to visit the wife's family over Xmas. Had the choice of driving her new '09 Forester our old faithful 03 Explorer or the new addition to the family the 2000 Explorer with 180,x.. miles. After originally buying the 2000 for my daughters college car it presented a number of issues the most expensive of which was needing a new transmission so I gave my daughter the '03 and set about replacing numerous front end parts and plugs and wires which I'd figured on and the trans with a reman, which I hadn't. I'd put a couple thousand miles on the Explorer without issue after finishing it so I figured it would probably be alright for the trip. It performed well in some pretty crappy conditions rain snow and COLD and gave me just over 15mpg on the way there at about 75 mph avg fairly hilly for approx 450 miles. Haven't figured mileage for return trip yet but i was a bit gentler on the gas. My wife gave it her supreme endorsement by saying she liked the performance of the heater.
