Just got some bad news

Honestly if I get v8 I'm going to do the 4406 swap screw the sissy awd. If I do get one what unfortunately will happen with the v6 is parts truck for the v8 I've put way to many new parts on that truck. Sorry to say but I'll probably be quiet on the board for awhile.

Have you even driven a “sissy” AWD? In stock form a v8 would have zero trouble following your SOHC anywhere. It’s not like the 4405 isn’t a light duty case itself.

That sissy AWD would also destroy a 3rd Gen.

No low range eventhough that's never bothered me in the past plus all the stuff I've read on the board bought them not working half of time. Lol All I was saying. Honestly the main reason I said I'll look for a 3rd gen is cause I remember liking it
As a traveling vehicle(before it got a bottom end knock) but agreed 3rd gens are not meant for wheeling

What about installing a good used transmission? By 06-07 they are very tough and you can find them for $500-800 or so

If one is patient you can find decent under 200k mile v8s still they come around a couple of times a year even up here in the boonies

If the motor is starting the death rattle, it may not be worth it. Depending on the shape of the vehicle. If it’s cherry, sure

Ive drove the AWD V8 and i can say it's more capable that a 02 tahoe 4X4 and it will go anywhere that your V6 will

You guys should try them with true 4wd
5.0 w a 4406 t case has rwd, 4hi and 4 low it really turns them into capable trucks
As good as the awd is the 4wd is way better!!

Exactly thank you!

Well heard back from the transmission shop. They looked over the valve body and found it to be in good shape. The guy figured it was a torque converter and quoted 1600 to fix that or about 3300 for a rebuild. Erg.. it's a decent amount all things considered. It also sucks because last time I moved my explorer there was an oil leak. Plus that motor is starting to rattle.
We recently had the torque converter go out on our 1997 EB, 160K miles, with the 4 L SOHC engine and 5R55E transmission.
We opted to have the entire transmission rebuilt for a total of $3200 which is right in line with your quote.
So far, the transmission seems to be working properly. We're keeping our fingers crossed...
Good luck.

Dick

Nope not really a lot of cosmetic issues i usually don't drive him except in the snow. Well when the trannie started acting up at least

With the transmission out it’s a good time to fix any timing issues the sohc has like new tensioners (or go manual) and re seal the intake

How many miles on sohc?
Does it rattle on cold start and from where?

The cosmetic looks easy enough I dont see any damage in the door and no rust

In this market explorers are not as “disposable” as they once were meaning we save more of them now (clean hood title ) because value is up and used cars are $$$$ so not as easy to replace them once crushed

200k + I'm not 100% as the instrument cluster has been changed out before I got it. It's a grump on cold starts if I don't build oil pressure it sounds like a diesel. Also when it warms up it does make a rattle.(Sounds like it's coming from the front.) Yeah the cosmetic aren't really that big of issue new fender bumper and header panel.

Ouch rattles and no oil during cold start With this miles is borrowed time
Replace sohc and trans or replace w v8 or buy a v8 and let this one go

Clear as mudd!!

Kinda figured😕 well I'll keep my eyes peeled.

It would probably worth it at this point just to swap the motor and transmission, especially since both would have to be removed to fix the problems they have. The nice thing about an engine/tranny swap is that you could probably find a better motor and transmission for wheeling.
