It is not too easy to turn the input shaft, it takes a pair of vise grips to turn it. Then it is not too bad, it is tight but turns without straining. Is this normal due to the dragging of the clutches.

2n question. I need to adjust the bands now and I see that the 95-98s require 2.5 turns to be backed off on one of them. The explorer I am working on is a 98. I don't see why though. I would thing 2 would be fine for both. Any ideas.

Thanks Glacier for all the helpful info. I rebuilt this tranny and didn't need a manual for anything. I have rebuilt some other Automatics in my past but it has been a while.

Once I wrap this rebuild up I will be posting all the helpful diagrams I found to help out others.

Welcome to this forum! The front has the pump gears behind the bell housing. You have some resistance, which is normal, and nothing to worry about. This is from my thread on adjusting the bands:
4R44E/4R55E 5R44E/5R55E:
Single wrap bands.
Overdrive band = 2.0 turns back.
Intermediate band (1995-1998) = 2.5 turns back. All other years 2.0 turns back.
This information can be found in the Ford 3 ring binder, and the ATSG manual, so there is a reason for it. It doesn't say what the reason is. Some people have done only 2.0 turns, and posted that they had no problems. Since Ford recommends 2.5 turns, keep it at 2.5 turns.
