how dirty should the k&n get before it needs to be cleaned or should i go by milage? I hear they can go for like 50,000 miles without being cleaned, and they still flow the same with like 1/8 inch of dirt on them, is this true?
You want the filter to be slightly dirty. However, if you get a lot of dry dirt on your finger when you rub it on the filter, you should probably clean it. You can also do a "half-cleaning" every once in a while. That's when you dust it off instead of washing it, and reapply more oil. The most important thing is to keep the filter well oiled.
Yep The oil is what really catches the dirt. I had one years ago for my '67 Mustang. It had a 6 cyl in it with a single barrel carb. In order to have a filter fit it I bought one made for a VW engine and made a sleave adapter to fit over my carb and into the filter. Neet arrangement, it was a chrome dome shape about 8" round on top of my carb. I cleaned it a couple of times but never really worried about how dirty it was, worked great and never had to buy another for the life of the car.
