K&N Filter "contaminating" my MAS - What should I do?

My mechanic (who also rolls a Ford Ranger) told me that the oil from my K&N is making its way to my Mass Airflow Sensor and causing crud to build up on it, causing the engine to run like it needs a tune up. My MAF was cleaned last week, and the truck (a '94) runs like a new pickup. Its all because of the cottonseed oil from the K&N reaching my MAS. I'm not sure what I should do, or if anyone else on this board have had the same problem. But, should I go to using a paper filter again???

you're probably either putting too much oil on it, it has a hole, or it's not sealed to the mas properly. i've been running a KN filter for over 4 years without any problems or crud whatsoever.

As per the instructions, I have sprayed enough oil on my filter in order that there are no white spots on the element. I have the airbox ziptied shut using new zip ties each time I check my filter. My mechanic is the only person who has ever pulled my MAS for inspection, and everything there looks neat and tidy...

I believe the problem lies in not letting the oil sit and dry for awhile.

This is a very common problem on the F-150s, especially if you're running a FIPK or Airaid or something similar...

The key is not over-oiling, as well as letting it sit long enough to absorb into the element.

i agree too much oil or not allowing it to turn pink and absorb will definately cause oil to foul up the maf.....

Actually the oil K&N uses is actually VERY thinned out ATF oil. It will also work in a pinch if needed on the trail to oil the filter. They just put it into an aerosol can and charge you $10 for it. I was told this directly via a long time employee at the K&N H.Q. in Riverside, CA.
