At the dyno shop today, the guy told me he only worked with kenne bell supercharges, and could get me one for relativley the same price as the powerdyne unit.. alittle less actually, he said about 100hp gain at the rear wheels. this was with a 6 psi application.

Anyone know anything about this brand? I've never even heard of it.. is a 100hp gain signifigant for the price?

basically, kennebell chargers are good. you get low rpm boost like an eaton, but they are real efficient and dont have the heat problems the eaton does.

kennebell does not make a kit for the 5.0X, so it would take some adapting. i dunno if the shop guy really looked under your hood with the charger in mind, or just assumed he could get a K.B. without checking. but, it will take some fab work.

dunno, he told me his mom has a 99 5.0 mounty, and he was gonna put on on heres.. maybe I should let him do hers 1st :P

he runs this shop "redline performance" all on his own, hes like.. maybe 25, pretty young to own a business on his own. He does repairs dynos and upgrades, and can do diablosport chips. Overall a cool guy, and hes a ford guy, so that makes it easier to talk about my daily with him. he doesn't have a large customer base, but it seems he knows most of his customers well, so quality over quantity I suppose. Seems like a great gyu to work with.

he was putting a kenne bell 8psi on an F-150 when I was there, it looks like an intake mount style (I'm not sure the exact name)..at any rate it looks like it fits on top of the motors, which might be why he beleives he can fit it.. I mean theres nothing up there signifigantly different from say a 5.0 stang is there?

Except in truly custom applications, usually when they run two of them, a positive displacement blower will sit directly over the intake.

yea, i was just refering to acc. mounts, what to do with the DIS ignition, etc. etc. it is definatly doable, just like i said, some fab. work needs to be done. Darkfox- you are right. the 'Bell charger just replaces the upper intake manifold. sounds like a good shop/guy to know. definatly make friends with him;) .

DarkFox -

Is he around Augusta? If so, how about letting me have his name/number. I have a few questions maybe he could help with about adapting a Bell into the place of my Eaton. I've got the ideas, just need some specs on a Bell charger uinit itself.

Thanks...

you have a PM :)

I'd like to see it myself honestly, I've never seen a top mount charger on a 5.0 before.

he had a 5.4L F-150 there at the time he was installing one on.. the installation didn't look too terriblly different in that particular truck.

I'd think a charger like tihs would be signifigantly cheaper, but may also come with an underdrive pulley style setup to allow it to use the serpentine syustem the rest of the belts do.

Dark - here is some pics of mine -

Assorted Pics After Install

I keep meaning to get my site updated, but just haven't done it.

Anyway - the Bell would be a good setup if you can get the right fabrication pieces for it. I want to see what the Bell looks like so I can figure a way to fab a new intake cage for one and replace it for my Eaton...

nice, thats a lot cleaner I think than the side mount ones (centrifugal? I can't remember the name diffs, sorry)

I dont see why you would need specialized 5.0 parts for one like that.. it seems to me all the parts would bolt up to any 5.0, I mean the top half isn't that different is it? just the pulleys....

Well, the pulleys, belt, where to run the throttle body, intake line, etc. There are a few things that need to be moved or taken out if you go with a Stang kit. But you could make it work. I made the EE kit work - and it was designed for the later model 302's, not the regular GT-40 setup.

Supposedly the 95 Mustang Kennebell with the GT40 lower option is the best matched setup for the explorer. You would probably need to figure a way to mount your coil packs but that shouldn't be too difficult.

yea, that seems pretty easy.. I really prefer this type of charger, I'd think you could get a much better price on a mustang 6psi satin finish of these and save big bucks over one especially made for our trucks.. definatley so if the only difference is the coil pack thing.

100hp at the rear sounds about right. Probably even more since it doesn't have the same heat issues as the eaton. Alec has the BBK, which after 3 dyno runs, and some fine tuning, yielded 100hp at the rear. BUt you have the 5 under your hood, so who knows, probably more.

BBk makes a complete bolt on super charger for 89-97 explorer's that give 50% more horse power

http://www.bbkperformance.com/ cost is a little under $3000.00

:redexp:

pretty much everywhere I go, shops want $3300-$4k for every charger.. these are all 6psi satin finish not installed. install is an extra $1k.

I've priced powerdyne and kenne bell, I haven't looked into eaton much.

thanks, chargers are REALLY expensive to me, I dont have a very high cash flow currently, but I've been parting a truck that I bought for my resto. project and its given me alittle money to play with.. thats why I'm in on the apten thing.

if I could get a charger in the $2k range that'd be really good :P

i have repeated this so many times i am beggining to sound like a broken record- so this is the last time. Ford Racing Performance Parts sells the Powerdyne charger kit for $2600 for the 5.0 explorer, and here are the part #'s...

M-6066-E50 1996-1997 5.0X 6psi
----------E51 1998 5.0X 6psi
----------E52 1999-01 5.0X 6psi
all three list for $2695, and all three use the Powerdyne BD-11 supercharger. if you want more boost, then just get a pulley from www.superchargersonline.com
i also assume we can get our forum discount on these? maybe...

install on the powerdyne is VERY simple, just cause its a charger dont let it intimidate you. no oil lines to run, and its all bolt on. takes the average guy 6 hours to put on.

I called the ford racing dealer here locally about this very thing... I told them what you had said, they said ford made NO performance parts nor had any that fit on the 5L explorer, and had no plans of ever making any. "its not designed for performance"

I did not have the part number at the time.. perhaps that will help.. is this the kind of # the dealer would look up? cos the guy told me the only thing ford had for performance was the mustang and focus.
