I just went to park, and when I turned off the ignition, the key won't come out! The ignition switch won't turn back all the way. I tried putting some pressure on it, but I don't want to put too much. I don't want to break anything worse. I tried starting it a couple of times, but nothing. I don't want to leave it alone for too long with the key in the ignition.

that's what I was gonna say

*me waits before giggiling too loud*

been there, done that. sometime you have to turn the key back to the on position, move it out and back into park, then try again...also the vehicle will not start unless in park or neutral. then again, on my 5-speed most anybody that has been in it (including me the first time) didnt realize it had a dummy switch...and the starter kill turn on when the truck turn osff so you cant start it right back up, you have to disarm it first

tell me where the truck is and ill go fix it.....

Thank you.

I can't believe this has never happened to me before. :banghead: It wasn't in park. I don't know how I missed that one. I don't get why if it was in park it wouldn't let the key come out, but the engine would still start. Maybe ford doesn't have very close tolerances. Anyway, thank you all very much for your help and speedy replies. I kind of freaked out, and had visions of having to pay $$$$$$ to have it fixed (maybe key cut off, etc).

it happens to the best of us....my firswt car used to do it all the time and i did brake a key before i figured out you just had to slap it into park sometimes...i suppose its better than my parents car though that the key no longer works. you have to slip a screwdriver into the column and pry the linkage to start it.

I wish I had a clever picture to insert here. But I don't.

This is all you get:

Only if you're still moving.:D (reminds me of drivers ed, a girl in my class put it in park @ 50 mph!) No, as far as I know it doesn't hurt anything. I do it occassionaly too.

I do that whenever I drive an Auto, stupid sfety switches, another reason to have a manual tranny:D

My buddy was driving along in his taurus and at 40km/h the engine bay started shooting flames so he was liek screw this and threw it straight into park from 40km/h and opened the door, popped the trunk, walked casually over to the trunk and grabbed his skateboard then casually walked to the side of the road and sat on the curb to watch the car burn. About a minute later some guys ran over and put it out. Heh...hes kinda dumb
He got the car for free the day before lol

i get this call from my uncle yesterday that my coisnins 96 cavalier won start. she thinks its the alternator or cattery....all the lights come on but when she turns the key, nothing. of course, me, driving a stick, i didnt think about that safety switch so he drives me almost a hour out to the house and when we get there he runs to the restroom. she gets her keys and takes me to the car in the garage. i get in, try to start it and nothing. i tap the shifter and try again and it starts right up. so i end up getting paid 20 bucks to ride an hour out there, tap a shifter and ride an hour back. i thinnk some of my cousins dye is seeping through!
