2002 XLT
I have a 2002 XLT with the following symptoms:

- When it has been sitting locked for a while, when I touch the first button of my unlock code, the alarm sounds. I continue to type in my code and the alarm stops.

- Once it is unlocked and I open the door, I try to unlock the rest of the doors using the lock on the door panel. It does not work. I do know that I could use the keypad, but let me continue.

- After driving and I turn the key to the off position, the lock on the door panel does not work. If the key is turned to the on position, it does work.

- If the key is in the ignition in the off or first turn postion, the door chime does not stop even though no doors are open. I am not able to listen to my radio anymore unless the truck is running.

- If I try to lock the truck using the keypad, it does not work. Using the switch in the rear hatch does work.

I took it to the dealer today and paid $100 for them to diagnose the problem. They determined that there is intermittent power to the ground side of the power door lock switch. They were will to chase down this gremlin for $100/hour with price cap. I wasn't willing to let them do this. I was hoping since it was a dealer, they might have seen this problem before. They haven't.

Any help would be appreciated.

Just discovered that when I use the remote to lock the doors, the truck beeps twice instead of once indicating that a door is open. There is no door open.

The other symptoms sound like the system for the alarm and locking devices don't see all the doors locking correctly. Check the dome lights when you close all the doors on the X. Even though the the doors are Shut, the system doesn't see it. Check the door switches.

I have the exact same problem with my 2002 Eddie Bauer Explorer except for the door chime issue. The alarm is activated when a key is press on the keypad and stops when the keyless entry code is correctly keyed in. The drivers door unlock button does not work unless the key is in the ignition. All the keyless entry features work except locking all doors combination 6/8. Any thoughts? RAP or Gen Modules. Soleniods?

First of all, I apologize for not updating this topic once the problem was fixed. After taking the truck home from the incompetent dealer, it took me less than10 minutes to remove the drivers side door panel and find a broken wire. I fixed this problem, however it did not completely fix my problem.

I sent my documentation to another dealer in town and after much discussion I made the decision to have them look at it. The proceeded to find another broken wire inside the door jam. The wires are so thin that just opening and closing the door broke the wire. I am told this is common.

From there they also found that my headlight switch was faulty. This is the component on the dash were you turn your headlights on. They replaced this and I haven't had any issues since.

I hope this helps future users.

Mike

Problem Fixed

Thanks for all the help. I fixed the keyless entry, drivers side master door unlock, and rear defroster activated door ajar alarm problems by removing the drivers side door panel and finding the broken black wire in the rubber sleeve between the door and post. Reconnected the black wire and inserted the rubber sleeve back into place. The whole job took 1 hour to complete.
