I'm in the market to replace my stock air filter and came across the KKM air filter. I just wanted to know if anyone knows if they are street legal in California. I know there is a full replacement kit from K&N but don't want to spend $200 on it.
I don't know about the legalities in CA but the KKM is not emmission certified as is the K&N is. The kits are similar' the cost difference is in the cetrtification process.
I run the KKM and love it. We have no State inspections in Florida.
Nope. unfortunately the KKM is NOT street legal in CA!. It probably doesn't really increase actual emissions, but CA smog regs say that if an item that effects the operation of the powertrain isn't OEM, it must have the CARB (Ca. Air Resources Board) certification, with the appropriate sticker and cert. number attached. Smog techs are required to look for these aftermarket items and to verify their Certification as part of the smog check. No Cert, No Pass! Basicly, submitting a product for testing is expensive, and KKM chose not to have their filters CARB certified.
I have the KKM and I like it, but I saved all the OEM air box, ducts etc. so I can reinstall it at smog check time
