2001 Explorer Sport
Just installed a KKM Tru-Rev sport induction kit in my 01 Explorer Sport. I am very pleased with the results. The kit itself was well made and bolted in nicely (I did have to use an existing fastener for the included mounting bracket, rather than the one provided). My only gripe about the kit itself was the somewhat vague instructions. However, if you are even the least bit handy, you should be able to complete the install in about 30 minutes easily. All I needed was a 10mm, 8mm, and 12mm socket.

The increase in power was astonishing! I took a short drive prior to installation to get a good "feel" for the acceleration and sound, and then again after installation. Wow, what a difference! Much more raw power, and a great "throaty" growl during acceleration. The product itself is great, and I would highly recommend it.

I was a bit put off by the customer service I received from KKM, however. When I called to order, I forgot to give an alternate shipping address. The guy that helped me was obviously not pleased when I called back to give the shipping address. Also, after installing the kit I noticed that when revving to 3500 rpm in park that the engine began to surge. Not being highly technically savvy, I called KKM to inquire and was told by the same guy that took my order that it was "ridiculous" to rev to 3500 in park. He then said it was the stock rev limiter, and it would happen with any intake system on my vehicle. I appreciated the help, but didn't appreciate his condescending attitude. This, coupled with my experience placing the order, is causing me to be reluctant to ever order anything form KKM again (thinking of getting a chip soon).

Has anyone had similar experiences with KKM, or am I just being too touchy? Appreciate any feedback.

did you rmemeber to disconnect the battery and reprogram the computer?

Yep, thats the first step in the instructions.

How was the change in mpg? I want to get one but only if it lets me get 1 to 2 mpg's better.

YES, I had similar problems back in January when I ordered mine.

The "order taker" was extremely rude to me and when I inquired about his name, I was told he was the owner. It is apparantly a one man show.

They have a truly wonderful product and a very fair price; however his people skills need a litt;e ( read = complete overhaul ) polish.

Just put it in over the holiday. However, I'll post an update with MPG improvement/change after I've gone through a couple of tanks.

I didn't have a problem with thier service. I was told they were out of stock, & got a later shipping date. That date came, & my order did ship out on that day.

Stock rev limiter at 3500rpm? That's a new one.

lol thats pretty high for park. anyways i got a stock intake with K&N, should i sell the filter and buy this kkm how much did it cost? $150?

Do you have a K&N drop in filter or the cone type filter?

If the drop in type, you might consider changing for a KKM or even the K&N cone kit.

The KKM is less than $199.

Good luck....

The KKM setup cost $89.95. With shipping it came in at $100 + change. Its really a great kit for the price (considering some of the crap I've seen out there for around the same price, i.e. Tornado useless vortex thingy).

There is a kit available that comes with a K&N filter charger (look under the product reviews section of this site). Its around the same price I guess, but I can't attest to the quality. The KKM is top notch.

BTW: If any of you are interested in seeing my installation, I can take some detailed shots of how I mounted the kit in my 01 Sport. Although, it is a pretty strait forward install.

king fish thats CHEAP where'd you get it

are these KKM kits legal, emissions wise? i live in california, if that makes a difference.

98greyxlt...they are not legal in cali, but when it is time for smog check you just toss on the stocker....if you get pulled over and they find it, you just toss in the stock airbox and get the fix it ticket dismissed.

KKM

How bad is it if we take these things off road? Will any dirt get into the motor being that it's exposed. I think it's perfect for street appications, but what about all the dust off-road?

jim -

thanks for the info... after i made that last post, i read around a little more and saw the same, that they're not legal in cali.

does anyone know about the k&n fipk for the 98 sohc? don't see it available on the k&n site. sohc owners out there... what k&n fipks are you using?

My K&N FIPK is for my '97 but it was discussed here about a year ago and the consensus was that the '98 is the same as the '97. I sent you a picture of my FIPK on my '97. Let me know if you need a picture of my stock air box.
