Im sort of new to this website but have been researching for a while now. I have a 2004 explorer xls with a 4.0 v6. just wondering what are some options for an intake. looked at the kkm true rev for my x, anyone have anything to say about this kit or any other kits that would work?

spend less money... remove the silencer from the airbox, then drill holes in the bottom 1/2 of the box, then buy a K&N filter ( part number 33-2207 )...

same results, less cash...

I would second this. Or if you want to save even more you can pick up fram air hog filter. I bought a kkm induction kit for my old 93 explorer with the ohv v6. It just made my truck sound nicer and did nothing else for it.

Do Danny's mod and then cut a whole behind the grille so you get even more air.

On my 02 mounty I can't find a "silencer" tell me what I am looking for. And for drilling the holes do you just mean right in the bottom of the box under the filter or in the sides or possible both? The air intake hose to the box on the Mounty goes into the headlight area. Not a very good set up IMO it doesn't get a good shot of pushing air. There is really no way to reroute it I looked around and all it too tight to run a big hose, so I guess I am stuck with that. But as for drilling holes that sounds good. I think it would suck in some more air that way. This shouldn't damage anything because the air still has to pass through the filter and not really any way water could get in through the holes.

here are the steps i did...

* K&N Filter Part No. ( 33-2207 )

* disconnect the battery ( resets the PCM to a certain point )

1. for your 02, unbolt the top of the box from the MAF...

2. open the airbox by undoing the 2 clips on the side, and pull the top open...

3. remove the filter...

4. the bottom 1/2 of the box is held in by 4 rubber gromets, 2 on the bottom side of the box, and 2 on the fender side of the box. gonna have to wiggle the box loose a bit then yank it out. might be a little tough, might have to use a little force.

5. the silencer is the 6-7'' tube thats in the box ( the only 1 ) pull this out...

6. drill holes in the walls of the box. i did the front, and fender side of the box...

7. then place the bottom 1/2 of the box back in where the gromets line up...

8. place filter back in...

9. bolt the box back to the MAF...

10 reconnect the box clips...

11. reconnect the battery...

12. turn on your X and let run for about 10 minutes or so in idle, then take a quick cruise and feel the difference...

hope this hlps fella !

and you actually felt a hp gain from this
and its safe to do

I haven't got a K&N fliter but seems like it does have a bit better throttle response. And sounds great. Give a good roar out from under the hood now. Not too loud but when you get on it gives a good roar.

02EBEX,

i can def feel gains after doing the mod

if you do this mod i promise it will make you smile...

thats sick, thanks, just what im lookin for, not tryin to spend to much money but i wanna hear SOMETHING out of my v6. really wish i had the v8 bc i love the sound of the roar but i deff gotta try it out once i get some time. seems like its shouldnt take too long anyway. do you have any pics of it?

limited view, but i have holes drilled now in the front side / fender side / back side of the lower portion of the box...

i kinda messed up a few holes in the front, but it does the job...

Dang you really put some holes in that thing! I only done a few. I think that just taking off the silencer will help on the mounty where it runs to is right behind the headlight. I just think it will breath better now. How about putting some screen over that big ol gapping hole? Any need in that? I Think I may put some more holes in mine. But then the screen over the hole would be useless right. Well any air goes into the motor has to go through the filter anyway so why worry.
Oh ya, anybody got a cheap source for a K&N filter?

the more you drill ( within reason ) the more air that will flow obvisuosly...

the screen like what you find in your house window isnt a bad idea, cause it will just prevent the box from sucking up small rocks or small sticks or something silly like that. i actually plan on doing what you are suggesting, it cant hurt.

just go to autozone or pepboys or something like that for the filter

pulling the silencer out wont trigger a light to come on.
thats the only thing im worried about.

and i want to make sure it dont sound like ****.

i promise you it will not trigger any lights... and it wont sound like ****...

i promise you will smile after the mod is completed

NOt a bad sound. Just a little of a roar which I like when you are really in the throttle. It isn't any louder than my wifes 08 Mounty. That thing has always been louder than my 2002. Now I am just looking for a good deal on a K&N to go in it. Oh ya, going to try to fink a pc of window screen to put in there too I will let you know how it works.

straight. i guess once i get some time, ill go out and buy a k&n filter then proceed to drill and get that silencer out

I've got a '98 XLT with a 5.0L V8.
Could I do that same mod? I don't see why not, but I'm not very car smart, so I just want to make sure.
I really don't feel like spending $90 for a KKM intake.
