I need help. When I switch my explorer spport trac 2005 into 4x4 it knocks with a big jolt. What is happening? I'm really upset because I paid for the extra miles and years and now I'm not covered under warranty. This sucks.

What engine, transmission, and what type of 4wd?

How many miles? Modified? Tires and wheels OEM and match front to rear or not?

What are the conditions under which you switch into 4x4, and does it knock 100% of the time that you do this?

Have you owned 4WDs before (not being insulting, you'd be suprised how many people today have no experience with them and destroy them by dry shifting at highway speeds).

well to answer the questions.

What engine, transmission, and what type of 4wd?

4.0 v6, 5 speed auto trans, switch auto 4wd

98,000 miles, Not modified, Tires have always been the same until tire king put two good yr with still having BF Goodrich. They didn't match until I bought new tires four months ago.

What are the conditions under which you switch into 4x4, and does it knock 100% of the time that you do this? Winter snow adn yes it knocks all the time in 4x4

Have you owned 4WDs before (not being insulting, you'd be suprised how many people today have no experience with them and destroy them by dry shifting at highway speeds). Yes I have and know switching to 4wd on paved roads without bad terrain is a no no.

has it always made the knock? or is it something new (are you SURe its new?)

also are you putting it in 4x4 while moving or sitting still? when exactly does it make the knock? is it sort of a clunk after you press the botton, or once you start moving?

it could be normal.. if you hit the bottom while you're moving, suddenly all that front end stuff hasto instantly start spinning, this usually makes a clunk sound (unles syou have manual hubs already locked)
