on Friday I'm picking up a D30 out of an '88 XJ for $100.

I'm not sure what gears are in it, but I'm thinking I may end up with 4.33s when I do the swap.

EDIT: it has 3.07 !!!

will I have to change out the carrier if I go 4.10s or 4.33s?

I say go for it, with Dana 44, narrow witdh setup, 4.10 gear is gonna run 32s. coils, ford stlye radius arms and rock and roll as reliable trail rig, yea stock ifs would hold up with 32s decent, but you still have to worry about rack/pinion steering and few other weaker links IMO

I am definitely going for it!!!

I have my D30. I believe it to be an HP D30 with 3.07 gears and a vacuum disconnect. also its from an '88 XJ and its really dirty! the motor had leaked oil on it for a LONG time. I just went through this same kind of cleanup with my mustang

so obviously a bit needs to change as far as setup goes. I'll need to get rid of the coil pads and shock mounts as I'll be going c/o.
I don't know if I want to get rid of the factory arm mounts and make my own for a 3-link, or if I want to run a linked radius arm like demarble did here.

I'm gonna regear the rearend to 4.33. Should I buy the gears and find a shop to install them? Or should I have the shop worry about getting the gears? I still need to find which shop I'm gonna use
