about 155k on the clock...bone stock.

When I remove my gasoline cap, there always appears to be a very large rush of air going in.
I'm guessing it's a release of a vacuum in the system.
I do not remember it being lasting this long. Seems to last longer the emptier the tank is.

Is this normal...

your canister purge valve is likely bad, try a search for this sucker
check the hoses to it first, they are like $20 and failry easy to replace.

my explorer doesn't do it, but my dads cutlass does it almost every time. when the tank is near empty it lasts a good 5 seconds at least. Never had it happen to my ex, though. I certainly wouldnt worry about it.

I would worry about if my canister purge solenoid was stuck open and always purging the tank and chacoal canister it is going to effect your MPG and emissions

Do you ever smell raw gas when you come to a stop after getting off the highway?

only once in awhile do I smell gas (quite infrequent).
It is garage parked and that is when I might smell it (and I talking only maybe one a month).
But I really do notice the long air hiss when releiving the cap.

Looked at the lines. They are old, and the one from the canister to the purge valve is quite hard(old).
I was planning I checking the operation of the valve this week end, using a vacuum pump and 12v tocheck stuck open/closed.

I might be wrong and I am sure someone will correct me but I am pretty sure our gas system is a pressurize system and it uses vaccum to get the gas out of the Tank. That is why most trucks will have the Engine Light come on or Check Gas Cap if the Gas Cap is not on tightly becuase it thinks the truck has a bad fuel pump. I know my 94 Ranger did the same thing and I had a buddy that work at Ford and I thought I would ask him and I got educated about the operation of fuel systems. I would just say you got one heck of a suck pump and it is normal operation.

geesh stop yelling! hahah
most trucks do not have the gas cap light, only 96+ OBD-II trucks and not even all of those.

There are two fuel systems the return style and the non return style.
His 94 truck has a canister purge solenoid which is opened and closed by the trucks computer. When the valve opens the vapor line and charcoal canister are purged of any collected vapors from the top of the gas tank, I believe the valve opens at WOT only. The valve is connected to the throttle body on the OHV 4.0L so the vapors are mixed with the incoming air and burned up in the combustion chambers.

the 96+ trucks have the same basic system, but they actually have two solenoids, one is mounted up front under the battery tray and the second is mounted back above the spare tire, where the charcoal canister also resides.

On either of these EVAC systems if the canister purge solenoid is stuck open, the throttle body (manifold vacuum) will be sucking vapors from the charcoal canister and the fuel tank at all times instead of just at WOT. This is when you will smell gas, and this is when your canister purge valve needs to be replaced. There is no "suck pump" in the gas tank or otherwise, the vapors from the tank are collected in the charcoal canister and purged into the intake manifold using manifold vacuum, for emissions reasons.

in 98 I believe it was they switched to a non return style fuel rail and the computer actually controls fuel line pressure with an adjustable regulator, but the fuel tank is still pressurized and evacuated through the use of purge solenoids and manifold vacuum.

In 96 they simply added a sensor to the gas tank so the computer would know if a leak is developed in the pressurized system (like a broken hose, or gas cap is left off) and be able to warn you, this system reduces emissions, or at least vapors from our atmosphere, if the system has a leak it is the same as having a manifold vacuum leak and it should be repaired.

Your friend at Ford should be able to tell you the same thing. I have replaced many Ford canister purge solenoids on first gen explorer's, if you have a sucking in the gas tank, you have the intake vacuum purging the tank all the time and your system has a leak or needs a new solenoid. You can test the signal from the PCM (two wires) as well to ensure the solenoid is being told to open and close. it is also possible that your gas cap is not longer venting as it should, so you can check that as well; but I personally have never had the factory cap fail on me.

But 410 there should be some pressure released when unscrewing the gas cap correct???

some sure, even when everything is working properly :) Thats why I asked if he smells fuel and also to look at the vapor purge lines at the solenoid. You can also check the chacoal canister (I dont have one) and the line from the tank. If you are low on gas then it will create this as well because there is more volume for vapors and vacuum in the tank then liquid, so it takes more pressure in the tank to purge all the vapors

I think it's normal. My X does it,(purge valve IS good) my Acura does it, & most every car I have driven has done it to some extent.

he said a very large rush, so I figured he posted this because it is more then normal, there is vacuum in the tank, when you remove the cap the vacuum is released.
if its alot of vacuum and is "wooshing" each time more then you are used to then it points to a faulty EVAP system

thanks for the tips.
i will check them out this weekend.

I brought it up cuz it seems to me to do it longer when i fill up near 1/4 tank.
say maybe 5-8 seconds.
i just do not remember it doing it that long (maybe a second or 2)

but it could be the cold air affecting it more??
