I tried the search but most of them are problems with the earlier models and got confused. Maybe you all can help me out. Well here are the symptoms of my air conditioner. It blows out hot air when in fan and in AC. Before this happened, i always heard a clicking sound from the engine like something turns on then off and then on again. What could be wrong with my AC and how can i fix it?

If it blows hot air out no matter what level you put it on it could be the blend door stuck in the heat position. Do you have the auto climate control or the manual?

What happens when you put it on max AC? Does it blow warm air or hot air (cooler air than in other positions). That is one way to tell if its the blend door.

Check to see if your compressor comes on when you turn the a/c on. The "click" is your compressor turning on. If it's not turning on, there are a few possibilites as to what could be wrong.

When i turn on the AC at Max, warm air comes out much cooler then if i turned the temperature to hot. Also, the compressor I guess turns on because i hear clicking sounds.

Ok, when my blend door was broken, I got hot air regardless of the temp dial position. I got hot air on every setting except max AC because that circulates air from inside the car. Sounds like that may be your problem. Have a look at Dead Link Removed

But did the temperature change as you changed the dial?

No. The temp dial was inop. Does yours change the temp? If so, and you hear the compressor come on, you probably have a leak and are too low on coolant. That is my problem now. Does your compressor click on and off often? Several times per minute?

Yeah it changes with the dial. my compressor does click on and off. Is that normal?

You are probably just low on coolant. Have it recharged with die and see what happens. If the compressor kicks on and off frequently, that means you are low on coolant.

Is this engine coolant? or is this something else? how can i recharge it?

The AC coolant. I say coolant because its not freon anymore. The name of the coolant is a bunch of letters and numbers. I'm not sure which type of coolant they used in explorers. You can buy the stuff in cans at an auto parts store. You just need the adapter and you can recharge it yourself. If you take it somewhere they can recharge it and put die in it. If it stops working again, they can look with a black light and will be able to locate the leak because they will see the die. I've already had mine recharged once and it stopped working about 2 weeks later. I just havnt gotten around to bringing it back to have them look for the die.

You'll need R134a refrigerant.
