I have a 2002 2WD XLS. I have a slow leak coming out of the side of the rear diff, right where it looks like the axle goes in. Is this the axle gasket or something else?

Should be a seal. Haven't messed with it myself. Should be able to pull the axel out, remove the seal and put a new one in. Not sure how much of a mess.

So is that the axle seal? Sorry, never worked on a diff before. Just want to make sure I buy the right piece from rock auto

Definitely sounds like the seal to me. I used Rockauto NATIONAL Part # 100537 when I rebuilt my diff last fall. They were nice quality and fit perfectly.

I bought mine at NAPA for $30 (SKF) OEM at dealearship is $42. Note that the seal design has been revised multiple times because they are prone to fail during re-installation. The new one is a 1 piece design and thicker. Rockauto sells the older version real cheap, don't buy those, get the expensive ones.

Cool thanks. Is there a diy somewhere that explains how to do this?

So to get the axle out nothing within the diff needs to be taken apart? I just take off the wheel hub and give the axle a wack with a wooden stick?

Correct  The axle is held inside the diff with a compressible metal ring that will slide out of the carrier when you hit the axle like in the post I linked.
