I have a leak that comes and goes. I took it to the local mechanics and they told me it was a leak in the camshaft syncronizer. I do not have any performance problems...nice accelaration...good gas milage...no check engine light...so I assume it's just a failure of the seal (about 20 dollars from motorcraft).
Isn't the Camshaft Sync seal on the top of the engine? Do I have to replace the whole thing or can I get away with just replacing the sensor and the seal?
Any comments and information would really be appreciatated...

I have a 2000 XLS 6 cyc 4 ohv

The location of the Cam Sync would be appreciated...how can I be leaking oil from the bottom if the cam sync is on the top?

The location of the camshaft position snychronizer is...

dead center rear of the engine on the OHV...It is located under the rear lip of the intake manifold...If you look above the center of the flexplate and directly above the gray core plug, you will see a black sensor on top of an aluminum body bolted into the area where a distributor would have gone...

What side of the engine is the oil running down? Does it only cover one side of the oil pan flange bolts?

Do you have any pictures of the oils' path?

no pics yet...I really can't see it from the top and I have not gotten underneath it yet....i let the local mechanic shop look at it and they are the ones that told me that is where the leak is coming from...

Try snugging up the valve cover bolts.
It's more likely the leak is coming from there
than the cam sensor, and much easier to fix.

Interesting bit of info...

I just replaced my engine and I am running into a problem with my valve cover bolts...I am having to re-tighten them every couple of days...

I have never had bolts I tighten up loosing up...This is a new situation...And yes there is a small amount of oil leaking from the back of the engine as well...

A quick cursory check of the valve cover bolts wuld not hurt...And it might solve a mystery oil leak too!!!
