Done some searching around on this forum, and everything involving a leaking sunroof is either labor intensive, expensive, or both.

My vehicle: 1996 Explorer XLT

Sunroof works fine, but after a week of heavy rain I noticed an odd smell. Damp, moldy headliner. Looked up and saw what's in the picture below. Stains around the driver's side door trim and all around the perimeter of the sunroof. Bought the vehicle for $800, saw the staining around the trim, but I thought that was just 174k miles worth of wear and tear, didn't think leaky seals would be that big of a problem. Gotta hit it with some antibacterial stuff, mold inhibitor, and ozium the whole car to get the smell out.

I have no garage and no tools, so my options are limited. Right now I'm thinking of duct taping the seals on the top of the roof and dealing with not having a functioning sunroof. Pictured below is what I found when I was inspecting the trim for the driver's side door. Cracked rubber.

Am I screwed until I find a garage to rip this POS out and reseal it somehow? Or am I gonna have to take it to a Ford dealership and pay $500 for some service?

edit- reformatted embedded pics to urls, didn't realize how hi-res they were when I took them

Sounds like one or more of the sun roof drains are plugged. Often leaf debris collects in the drains and stops them up.

Find out where the drains exit under the truck and check those exits.

I had this issue and like SoHK said it's something like that. This will require you take somethings off to get access to the hoses. Remove A pillar covers, visors, and the rear view mirror. I also removed the upper electronic display (located towards the front of the moon roof. You will have to be careful and with the roof opened you will see 2 hoses. One going to the right and one to the left. I found mine were off so i pushed them back on after making sure they weren't clogged. A few weeks later got a good rain and more staining around roof and the head liner by the visors. Took it all down and the hoses had come off again. I went ahead and got new rubber hoses for the moon roof. I taped the new ones to the old ones to they could get fished down in the same place. I replaced the clips that hold the hoses to the drain pan for the roof. Since then no more problems. I think the OEM clips are just lacking. I used Spring close clamps. The only thing that sucks about all of this is checking for rust and fixing that and replacing headliner if you want. Good luck and hope this helps ya.

So much work for such a simple problem. I'm just gonna tape this b*tch up and deal with not having a sunroof. Seeing as how I don't have a garage or workspace to deal with removing all of that crap.

I appreciate the walkthrough though, and I'll save it for future reference purposes.
