Just saying hello from North Central Texas. I have a 2004 Explorer XLT with about 40k and found this site while trying to learn about the truck's transmission. It's not broken but I think it needs service. My local Kwik Kar thought they could do it as part of one of their packages and only told us when we came to pick it up that the truck needed to go to a dealership for tansmission service because it required the driveshaft be removed. I'm not a mechanic, but I think there must be a little more to the story. Lying under the truck the next day trying to look for a label or some kind of ID on the transmission I saw what appeared to be a bolt that had recently had the top half sheared off. I say recently, and really only noticed it, because it was a shiny circle among a bunch of grimy parts. The bolt is one of several that I think connects the transmission to the motor, maybe. Facing the front of the vehicle it is at about 9 o'clock I think. I'm not saying the gentleman at Kwik Kar thought he knew what he was doing and realized too late he didn't because I don't know that is what happened. All I mean to say is that it also needs to be fixed.

That wasn't meant to be a rant, stuff like that happens.

So, I'm off to discover what transmission my vehicle has, what exactly can or should be done to it, and whatever else I find along the way. Thank you in advance to those from whom I'll be learning.
