Just curious if anyone knows off hand the life of stock spark plugs...? I have an 01 XLT with a little over 64k miles and am having a rough ride.

TIA!

Get some new plugs

I have an '02 XLT that started idling a little rough. I knew that Ford says 100K for the spark plugs, but took them out anyway to have a look. Instead of .050" gap, 3 of mine were in the .090" range. I replaced them with Bosch, and problem disapeared. Might want to look at yours.

01 with what engine?

plugs coule use a change likely at 65K, but you should also check a few other things, clean the MAS and reset the computer.
I would consider a full tune up if it was my new truck.

Is the check engine light on?

I pulled a set from my '99 SOHC after 60k and they looked brand new. I replaced them anyway.

Those plugs could have easily gone 100k.

It's a 4.0 V6 and yes, my engine light is on. I am taking it in next week for a full tune up and hopefully that will fix her up. It's idling rough and rides rough over 35-40 MPH, but lower than that it rides fine.

I'm one of these people that never has a simple, easy problem with a car. It's always the most expensive part with the most extensive labor that breaks! And I am unexplicably attracted to lemons. I'm hoping to change my luck with this Explorer!

just replaced mine on my '99 X about 2 weeks ago with 75000 miles and they were way out of range (about like daveleeander's plugs). might be a good idea to have the shop do it. although it will be costly ($200-$300) it might be worth it. It took me and a buddy 3 1/2 hours to replace them all. (and i busted up EVERY one of my nuckles doing it too) but now it rides like a charm.... :)

Viper, I just read your post about your spark plug/ABS light problem. The cost isn't much of a big deal, I'm prepared for it, but I am taking a 3 hour trip the end of the month with my kids so I definately want it fixed before that!

Katheros if your check engine light is on then your computer is storing a code. The code in the computers memory is either the issue you are having or related to the issue you are having.
Typically the CEL illuminates when an emissions sensor is out of range, such as an oxygen sensor, or EGR sensor.

Replacing the spark plugs will not solve your issue here, what you need to do is perform the KOER and KOEO tests (key on engine running, and key on engine off) and pull the codes from your computers memory.

You can do a search for how to go about this, autozone can pull the codes for you for free 90% of the time.
