The issue is drive shaft length when lifting an explorer. You can lift a 1st gen 4" without extending the front & rear driveshafts.
If you lift it 5.5+ then you may need to get the DS extending based on the type of lift and type of driving you do. If you take it off road then you'll most likely will need to extend the DS otherwise the shaft could separate under full droop. If you keep the rig to just the street then you probably could get away with not extending them..
I had really good luck with my 5.5 inch superlift. I didnt extend the driveshafts. I did do new shocks and brake lines. Plus the extended ebrake cable.
