1993 Explorer Limited
Hello, I have searched these forums for years and used the posts to help me along the way. But I just now decided to register. I own a 1993 Ford Explorer 4x4 Limited with 211,000 miles. Has been in the family since it was new in 93. Have not had to do ANY major repairs or replacements except for the transmission back around 120,000 miles. Just regular routine maintenance.

Anyways, I'm getting it ready for winter this year as it will be my daily driver for the winter. I haven't replaced any parts for quite some time now and I'm getting TONS of clunks, rattles, squeaks, etc while driving and hitting bumps. I will be tearing the Explorer down and replacing everything all at once. I will already be replacing coil springs, front and rear shocks, and rear leaf spring shackles.

I just wanted to know if you all could compile a list of parts that I should check or replace. Common parts that wear quickly, etc. (I'm assuming upper and lower ball joints, inner and outer tie rod ends, some sort of bushings, etc?) I will be buying all the parts and doing all the work when I have a couple days set aside. Thanks in advance!

Bump.
Plus good luck and have fun! I wish I had the time and funds to do a complete tear down and replacement :(

One thing I would suggest is to build up a stock of Kroil - it's a rust dissolving penetrating oil that I swear by - It will definitely help with taking everything apart!

Already have it!! Haha, I have PB Blaster and Kroil. :) I've already used tons of the Kroil.

Still nobody has replied with any suggested parts to replace.

radius arm bushings, body mounts, front wheel bearings, locking hubs. have you found some mud to see if the 4wd is working? u-joints? brake lines?

regular maintenance is relative. some people are very over the top thorough, some consider an oil change a major repair. at that mileage, i would spend some quality time with a flashlight looking over every square inch.

Brake fluid, brake line hoses, rear drum brake adjuster tension cable, radiator hoses, heater hoses, brake fluid, P/S hose, P/S fluid, gear oils, rusty fuel lines, rusty brake lines, U-joints, trans/motor mounts, sway bar bushings, muffler (check the top half, that's where our '93 was rusted), freeze plugs (particularly the one under the motor mount driver's side), door hinge pins, plastic sleeves on door latch pins, rear drum brake shoe pads (shoes can wear a groove in the pads stamped in the backing plate and catch in the groove locking the brakes)
Not only do you have over 200k, but this stuff is 20 years old.

If you gonna pull it all apart go ahead and do the axle pivot bushings and the anti-sway bar bushings but you definitively need the radius arm bushings done if they haven't already been done. I would recommend the polyethylene (I think that's the name) there a little more expensive ad a little harsher ride but the give you a firmer feel and more control.

Awesome. Great replies, thank you very much. When I stated routine maintenance, I meant all fluids had been regularly inspected and/or changed, all soft hoses and hard lines maintained, brakes maintained, and changed wheel bearings. All the other suggestions are awesome...that's what I was looking for. Also, my push button 4x4 is working properly.

Just a random question...do we know what the highest mileage recorded for an explorer is from a forum member? I don't see why I can't hit 250,000 with my explorer. Engine is in great shape, no leaking or burning oil, good compression still...

i dont know the highest, but if you like a vehicle it really aint that hard to replace the motor when it blows. i plan to keep mine until it is no longer safe to drive. could be 250k or 10,000,000...
