Locker, what should I do?

Here's another vote for the PowerTrax No-Slip!!!

I absolutely love mine... awesome on-road, no clanking or banging, and awesome off-road.

I ordered from Rocky-Road Outfitters (http://www.rocky-road.com/) about a year ago. They seem to specialize in Samurai's, but they were very cool to work with and it was the best deal I found - forget exactly what but around $360 - 380 w/o shipping. My only complaint is that it took a long time to come in b/c they did not have it in stock.

PowerTrax No-Slip all the way!

What does it cost to get one installed? I don't have the capabilities to do my own install. But for $260 for a locker, I'm thinking that I could get one sooner than later.
If you have some friends that are decent mechanics with a very small amount of tools you can save yourself maybe 3 hrs of rack time.
The actual install of the PT unit takes maybe 15 minutes but there is alot of prepwork, Put on Jack stands, remove the wheels, remove the brakes, remove the diff cover, remove the side and spyder gears, remove the axle clips, slide the axles out a tad, if you have High miles replace the outer seals while your at it just for grins, install the PT unit and reverse the process, took me about 4 hrs on stands.
You can download the entire install in PDF format off the PT site

Love my Powertrax!! I've had one in my X and I now have one in my Sammy. They work great! I've installed quite a few of both flavors, and the install is pretty easy. Just make sure you thoroughly read the directions and follow them to the letter.

JD is right on, may sound stupid but play with the unit the night before you install(PT Unit) learn what springs go where, how the paddles align etc, is truley a no brainer

And, if anyone is doing an install, and they get stuck, send me a pm or an e-mail..I can probably help ya out....

My dad and I did the one in his Zuki (lock right) wasn't to bad.

what is the differance with 7/8 vs 3/4's thogh? our's is 7/8's right?

It's a lot easier in the X than in the Zuk. Don't have to remove the ring gear to install it unless you are running 4.10's or higher.

the difference is the axle size. The explorers do have the 7/8" axle shafts. I believe some of the Mustangs and some of the Rangers might have the 3/4" axles.

No- powertrax has a locker for the LS... its the No-Slip locker.

lol maybe i worded it wrong...
Powertrax makes two lockers- one is called the no-slip, the other is called the lockrite. the no-slip can be put in an LS rear but costs $150 more than the lockrite.

Labor costs to put them in... not a clue. chris is doing mine (well i am- but he's guiding me) :D

Isn't that afull locker? I don't think my tires would think kindly to that on my 50 mile comute every day :(

The LAST thing you want on road to keep your driveability and durability is a Lincoln Locker!!! Drive it on road for a while with the gears welded, and parts will break because of the stress put on the drivetrain.

a little more money?... i dont consider $160 a "little bit" of money.

i ordered a lockrite and am gettin rid of the LS

You ordered a Lock-Rite for the Limited Slip carrier? I didnt think they were available?
Limited Slip guys have to look at the total cost- if you have a L/S carrier I dont think you can install the Lock rite in the existing carrier, so you need a new carrier. $25 bucks used, 75 new, then you need to pull the gears and swap the new carrier in, and then you can install the Lock -Rite. So youve turned a simple 2 or 3 hour "lunch time" locker job turns into an all day affair with specialized tools and measuring instruments.
IF you can set up the backlash and preload on the carrier than you will come out ahead by maybe 70 bucks, but you will have 2-3time s as much time in installation.
The extra cost of the NO-Slip is well worth the lack of hassle changing out the LS carrier.
If you pay to get the gear work done its going to cost 300 or so to have the carrier installed, the "drop in" locker has lost its advantage, at this point a Detroit or other full carrier replacement begins to look better.

My point after all that - If you have the L/S carrier the higher initial cost of the No-Slip is a much cheaper alternative than replacing the carrier to install the "cheaper" Lock-Rite.

Good luck - I really liked the No-Slip in my Navajo, best money/benefit mod you can do.

look a lincoln locker will not break anything if you are running on the road 2wd your front end will spin free you just have to be careful on sharp turns i drive a 97 explorer sport 4x4 with staight axel front and rear i have 4.88 gears and lincoln lockers front and rear and i drive 46 miles back and forth to work every day and my car has never acted up if you want a locker for cheep then get a spool

Some of my Jeep buddies have tried the electric lockers and they hate them. The limited slip doesn't really function, and it takes about 1/2 of a tire rotation for it to lock. If you have it locked and are moving forward, then try to reverse it will allow a tire to spin about 1/2 turn before it relocks, then it does the same going forward again. If you want a selectable, ARB is the way to go.
