Anyone know where to find a locking console or some type of lock kit to add to a console on a 2003 Expolorer?

Thanks,
Texan

we have been a few rounds about this and there are a few on older modles in existnace.

Someone one here has a way to instal locks but I PMed him and got no responce.
I have since forgotten about it till this post.

This just shows how Ford saves cost...LOL But yet the 04 Explorer XLT I got cost $10,000 more then my parents did in 1991 and now lacks a lockable console or glove box...(not to mention where is my moon roof...lol) I would love to buy a lockable console or glove box myself....it stops petty theft when leaving the car at the mechanics or whatever...I hate cleaning out the car before I leave it somewhere.

This would be intersting if someone starts to make one, I think it would sell pretty good.

texan - i got your PM and yes i can easily install the locks into a 2nd and 3rd gen. i am currently putting together a kit so others can do it, but im waitin on my digicam to get back from the shop (beer+drunks+electronics dont mix) once i do, ill get some pics up and ill have a price for the kit. so its on the way and should be available in a week or two.

Actually it was me that PMed you but cool. We are back on track I guess.

this is off topic i guess, but most of you know i have a toyota.... is there a way to lock my glovebox?

i should probably ask on the yotatech.com forum ;)

Thanks!!!

Awesome jgilbs

I'll bug you again in a couple of weeks.

well 13 years of inflation will do that. ;) If either the console , or the glove box locked would be nice, though I'd likely never ever use it.

13 years of inflation...LOL Yep, does not mean peoples paychecks went up that significant. Still I think it funny how they take so much off the automobiles but charge so much more...My 2001 Merc Cougar ZN was stickred at $25K (I paid $16,800) but my point is that it was loaded, leather, 6-disc cd, 17" rims, temp, miles left on tank...just more then the stickered $33K X I got...the X is not worth the differance.

Besides a locking glove box what did they take away from the Explorer? They cost a lot more to make now than they did in 1991. You don't make a 1/3 more than you did in 1991? If you paid anywhere near 33k for a new Ex, they sawyou coming.

MONMIX - Texan just PMed me today, sorry for the no response MONMIX (i have been trying to figure this out for a while in my free time) I have the lock, and i am trying to fabricate a catch for it. Looks like the kit would cost ~$45 including shipping with the parts I am using now(may be an ACE style tumbler key, or a standard blade key, not sure yet, if anyone has any preferences, let me know). If I could get this to work and I provided pictures, would anyone be interested at this price? If there is no interest, I guess there is no use persuing it further. Also, MBrooks, another useful features the designers removed (for one reason or another) is the under-hood light. I can see no reason for removing the light which was prob a whopping $.07 in wiring and a bulb.

I did notice that both my Ex and Mounty were missing these. It seemed like the Ex (96) did have a place for it, but it was just MIA. It's a shame the direction that Ford is going. Old Henry is probably rolling over in his grave. :(

thats sad that the glove box doesnt even lock..lol

Another thing they did away with (on my 98 at least) is a glove box light. I had to fab one in. Also fabbed in a center console light while I was at it.

I am, but for the console, not the glove box. Keep us posted.

Thanks,

I would be interested in a console lock. I have a 2nd gen X.

console lock would be basically the same parts as a glovebox lock (with a shorter catch) so it would prob be about the same price - $45 with shipping. i can put together a package deal with both the glovebox and console lock (keyed different, can be delivered keyed alike for an extra $10 charge) for $75 with shipping(saving $15), or a glovebox lock, console lock, and a conversion kit to add a bulb to the console for around $90. if anyone is interested, please email me with your name, email address, and what package you want (glovebox, console, or both). you will NOT be obligated in any way to buy by emailing me. I am just gauging interest right now. I can have the console lock done much sooner than the glovebox since I have access to an explorer without a console lock (my 92x) and my 99xls which is the model for my glovebox lock is at home. so if anyone is interested, just drop me an email, and ill try to have pictures up of the console lock by the end of the week

That's strage my glove box locks(even though it feels like I could easily break it) and I have lights in the glove box, under the hood, and even in the ashtray. As far as I can tell it's all factory wiring. What I would like is those little LED's for the cup holders.

sodjer - i think around 96 is when they stopped including these niceities, since i have them on my 92 and on my 99 i have none of these. anyone have later than a 96 and still have these features?

It must have been dependant on build date or model. My 96 didn't have a glove box light, underhood light, or glove box lock.
