Yes any fuse can work. The normal small fuses don't go big enough for the main wires. The stereo stuff does well, but it is likely higher and harder to get on short notice. I'd try to use common easy to get parts on the main car stuff, and use the audio level parts for that system.

I have read many size recommendations, most people have also. The typical recommendation is something near to what the alternator is rated it, or the max load figures. But I have also read correctly that fuses don't blow at their rating. So it really makes sense to err on the low side rather than the high side. A fuse at say 200 amps will flow 250 amps for quite a long time(say 30 seconds(guess)), before it blows.

So I'd suggest a rating below the alternator max rating, say a 150-175 fuse for a 200-250 alternator. The common bar fuses come in those sizes and fit typical small studs/bolts, they match spade terminals that you have on big wires.

Go overboard on the wire sizes, but go small on fuses if in doubt. You want the fuses to blow, instead of the wires. Regards,

Don is right, and everyone else who says it is factory is right too. Fusible links are there to be the weakest link if a short occurs in the alternator or somewhere along that cable. Usually they have high temp / fire retardant insulation so they if they do get hot enough to melt the wires inside they do it in a way that should not set surrounding items on fire. You should replace it with the fusible links again or an actual fuse.

EDIT: Didn't see the last two posts, I went into the editor before they were posted....

ok i put an ANL 80amp fuse since Adv. Auto. said my alternator was 95amp. So its still fused and have a 180amp anl fuse on the way so when i do the alternator upgrade.

Ive never seen or heard of a fuse on the Batt terminal on the battery. If it is a fusible link.. The Fuse wire will be a way smaller gague than the main line.. That set you have looks like a rigged power line, like someone didn't have the right gague of wire.
