Looked through 14 pages of searches, catalytic / O2 sensor question.

Ok,

My catalytic converters seem to be rattling. No its not the heat shields I just checked again last night to make sure.

I dont have sulfer etc. I did call my local dealership and they are going to look at replacing the cats under warranty on wednesday 2/25 when they do the recalled cruise cable.

Question I have is:

I am taking it to Autozone tonight to have any codes pulled.

The engine light isnt on, but did come on the day of purchase. Then it never came on again. I thought it was a loose gas cap but I am having codes pulled tonight to be sure.

If there are codes should I have autozone reset them before taking it to the dealer on Wednesday?

I guess what I am afraid of is the dealer pulling codes (if there are any) and saying that my O2 sensors are bad and not replacing the cats. I am at 74,000 miles so they only need to delay me for 6,000 to get out of it.

So if codes are present does that automatically mean that the cats are good or can the O2 codes be present and the cats be bad?

If anybody has suggestions before the next couple hours that would be great help to me.

Again I will post any codes after I get them if there are any present.

Thanks

O2 codes only mean they're getting bad readings. Therefore, a bad cat can throw secondary O2 codes.

If you have them checked, make sure you write down the number. I'd get them cleared. If the problem is bad, they'll just come back.

I wouldn't worry about it, I am a Ford Senior Master Technician. The only thing that will prevent the 8/80 emission warranty from covering them is impact damage or an obvious condition as in if you are burning a crap load of oil and that contaminated the cats (in this case youd have to be blowing tons of blue smoke for most guys to say anything or have a sever misfire that would lead us to the detection of this concern). If your truck runs well and its not a shield, it is the converter, then you shouldn't have a problem.

Thanks

I will post codes if I do get any tonight

No codes to be pulled or erased.

They did do the Cruise cable recall but he said they dont "test" the catalytic converters there.

I asked him if he meant drilling them etc and he said yeah. They will just listen if they sound bad then most likely they are.

When I went to pick it up they said they heard the noise but since the truck was warm when i brought it to them they couldnt tell if it was the converters or not.

He wants me to pick a day soon and leave it overnight.

Does this seem odd?
Again i am pushing 75,000 on her and I know in 5,000 miles they will not be warranted. Shopuld I hit another dealer or should I leave it overnight and see?

Call bullshit on them. Can't tell because it's warm my ass. My dealership tried the exact same crap on me when one of mine was rattling. I was about 2,000 miles from running out of the 8/80 warranty. I was like it rattles when the truck is running! Doesn't matter if the engine is warm, you can hear it regardless! Then they wanted to charge me to run tests to make sure it was bad. What a load of crap. I said I don't care if it's bad or not, it's noisy and therefor defective. I literally had to get loud and mean about it to have it replaced under warranty. Don't let them feed you a line.
