Well, I have been weighing the options ahead of me. I am more than likely looking at a cracked head on my original engine (wich I had plans of rebuilding or replacing this fall). Now, I can either replace the heads now and get a short-block this fall and tear it all apart again or do it now. I think I have secured a new to me ride. It is a 99 Nissan Frontier King cab 2wd. It needs a little TLC to be road worthy and some body work to look nice (who cares about that?). So I am thinking tear it down now (the Ex) and do it all one time (hopefully). I have been looking around at some remans with 3yr/100k warranty for a low low price of $1900 w/$250 core. The delivery is free but the dealer is only about an hour away so I will pick it up to maybe get a little better deal and maybe avoid the core charge. I could probably get my block rebuilt for less locally but with a much shorter warranty. My thoughts are that now may be the time to perform any modifications to help out performance area. Maybe a little porting and polishing on the intake and some exhaust work. I know some of you guys out there have some real mean machines. My question is if you were in my situation what would you do and why? It's a 91 model and I know I have read about a few things that you guys have recommended to others. All I ask is that you shed a little bit of your wisdom, of all things Ex, with me, please.
I am not to concerned about stressing the tranny, as it appears to have been rebuilt recently and is now equipped with 2 inline aux coolers and a temp gauge that never reads higher than 125 deg. unless driving off-road in low range, when it rises to around 135-140. So I believe it should have no problem handling a little more juice.
