Hi all

Looking to upgrade my ride and I'm faced with with two Explorer options I'm considering

1 - My current 97 is like a fathful hammer, it's had 2 heads and 2 handles but its the same hammer :) - if I keep her I need to go for a recon engine and gearbox (she is still strong on both) and if I'm going to do that then I need to replace all ancilaries (starter, injectors, valves etc etc... - who in the UK does a decent engine and gearbox rebuild - and I don't mean a gasket rebuild but a pucker grind and rebore job - any Ideas or recommendations?

2. Change to a new explorer - I've been looking on AUtotrader and ebay the lasy few weeks - can't find a decent - late - low mileage explorer - so if you know of a nice straight explorer - low miles - as young as possible please let me know - Last year I should have gone for a very nice 2003 RHD - like a fool I bought a Smart Car!

cheers

Jim

engine

hi jim if you want to go for the overhauled engine have a look at specialised engines web site . ian there brought an axle from me and i think he said they could do work on the explorer engine. cheers chris

Ok jim i've got ask. Why? if it aint broke and all that!
Tho i can see that you would get some more power back and you would have more faith that it won't fail.
On the engine, i doubt it would need a bore just a hone and new rings. Big end and main bearings would be needed, timing gear seals and gaskets. The heads you could get done at any reputable place. Again i doubt the valves would need replacing but the seats would be a good idea along with the lifters. The cams themselves would be worn also so a low mileage set could be thrown in.
Have you thought about getting a spare engine and stripping it yourself then shipping the various bits to get worked on and sourcing all the new bits and building back up yourself. This way you can be **** about everything and there is no rush as your truck still on the road. (got the timing tools you can borrow)

Oh and not sure if they have a web site but previously i have been recommended these guys for gearbox stuff
