Was just in for my 250K service on my '97 Explorer XLT (4WD, SOHC engine, w/ trailer tow pkg). I asked them to do an alignment, as there was a bit of a shimmy at highway speeds.
The service tech came back & said that my outer tie rods were loose, could not be tightened & they should be replaced (for about $250). Then they could do the alignment for me.
Am pretty sure my tires are ok (my 3rd set since buying the car new).
As my brake pads are near end of life, I may as well get them done & the rotors ground.
Anyone have a view to whether I am getting the straight goods on the options around the tie rods and alignment ?
Is replacement the right way to go.
Patrick.
